This cow was called Audhumla, and she lived all by herself on a frosty, misty plain, where there was nothing to be seen but heaps of snow and ice piled strangely over one another. Far away to the north it was night, far away to the south it was day; but all around where Audhumla lay a cold, grey twilight reigned. By-and-by a giant came out of the dark north, and lay down upon the ice near Audhumla.

Annie and Eliza Keary's 'The Heroes of Asgard' is a retelling of nine stories from Scandinavian mythology, including the origin story of the pantheon, the wanderings of Freyja, and the punishment of Loki. Although aimed at literate children, the stories contain a sense of doom and tragedy, as well as depictions of both base and noble behavior. The retellings may have been sanitized, but they likely drew on fairly accurate reproductions of the original mythology. The book also includes a Christian interpretation of the material, in line with the Keary sisters' inclinations and Snorri Sturluson's 13th-century rendition of the myths in The Prose Edda.
