Paris has been the international capital of fashion for more than 300 years. Even before the rise of the haute couture, Parisians were notorious for their obsession with fashion, and foreigners eagerly followed their lead. From Charles Frederick Worth to Gabrielle "Coco†? Chanel, Christian Dior, and Yves Saint Laurent, fashion history is dominated by the names of Parisian couturiers. But Valerie Steele's Paris Fashion is much more than just a history of great designers. This fascinating book demonstrates that the success of Paris ultimately rests on the strength of its fashion culture – created by a host of fashion performers and spectators, including actresses, dandies, milliners, artists, and writers. First published in 1988 to great international acclaim, this pioneering book has now been completely revised and brought up to date, encompassing the rise of fashion's multiple world cities in the 21st century. Lavishly illustrated, deeply learned, and elegantly written, Valerie Steele's masterwork explores with brilliance and flair why Paris remains the capital of fashion.

Born in Paris, Jean Baptiste Marie Augustin Challamel (1818-1894) was a historian who wrote extensively about various aspects of the social history of France. He wrote a great deal, and his works were well-received. Some of his titles included France and the French Through the Centuries (1882), The Legends of Place Maubert (1877), and The Ghosts of the Place de Grève (1879). Deeply a bibliophile, he was a bookseller as well as a library curator. He also was involved with the Société des gens de lettres de France, a group of authors who banded together to defend their interests. This edition is dedicated to Cecile Ravauger, able and energetic scholar and researcher of French social movement.

Excerpt from The History of Fashion in France, or the Dress of Women From the Gallo-Roman Period to the Present Time Therefore to write the history of female fashion in France is a more serious task than it might seem to be at the first glance. The levity Of the subject is mastered by its moral interest. Montesquieu remarks, in his Lettres Persanes, A certain lady takes it into her head that she must appear at an assembly in a particular costume; from that moment fifty artisans have to go Without sleep, or leisure either to eat or drink. She commands, and is obeyed more promptly than a Shah of Persia, because self interest is the mightiest ruler upon the earth.
