A SHERLOCK HOLMES SUPERNATURAL ADVENTURE The Hound of the Baskervilles is the third of four crime novels written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle featuring detective Sherlock Holmes and his companion Dr. Watson. When Sir Charles Baskerville is found dead, his face distorted with shock and horror, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are faced with a sinister and difficult puzzle. A fearsome creature stalks the wild and barren hills of Dartmoor in Devon in England's West Country. Is it a demon from the spirit world? Will it defeat their skill and courage? Who is the tall, mysterious figure seen lurking on the moor at night? The story is inspired by the legend of a horrifying hound of supernatural origin which was said to persecute all members of the Baskerville family from generation to generation. Can Holmes save the new owner of Baskerville Hall from the ancient family curse or will the hound claim yet another victim? Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle (1859 –1930) was a British writer and physician. He created the character Sherlock Holmes in 1887 for A Study in Scarlet, the first of four novels and fifty-six short stories about Holmes and Dr. Watson. The Sherlock Holmes stories are milestones in the field of crime fiction. Doyle was a prolific writer and his other works included fantasy and science fiction stories, plays, romances, poetry, non-fiction, and historical novels. In order to deflect publishers' demands for more Holmes stories, he raised his price intending to discourage them, but found they were willing to pay even the large sums he asked. As a result, he became one of the best-paid authors of his time.

Three of the enthralling novels that brought us the world’s greatest fictional detective are gathered here in one volume. In 1887, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s mystery novel A Study in Scarlet unleashed for the first time the unflappable Sherlock Holmes and his partner, Dr. John Watson. Watson and Holmes would go on to become two of the most widely admired characters in all of literature. The stories and novels that followed—including The Sign of Four and The Hound of the Baskervilles—expanded the duo’s practice at 221B Baker Street, thrilling readers with the impeccable powers of deduction that inevitably guide Holmes toward any mystery’s solution. A Study in Scarlet, a tale of Mormons and murder, is a drama of long-simmering revenge that plays out on the gaslit streets of London but has its dark roots in the pioneer settlements of Utah. The Sign of Four weaves together a stolen treasure from India, poison darts, and double-crossing thieves, while The Hound of the Baskervilles sets the legend of a diabolical hellhound and an old family curse against the backdrop of a desolate, moonlit moor. All three novels are gripping, timeless, and exquisitely plotted—beloved and indispensable classics of the detective genre.

Herein, Eleanor Hull chronicles the life of Cuchulain in 30 chapters in what is now considered to be a classic volume. This volume is further enhanced with 9 full page plates illustrated by Stephen Reid. Cuchulain is an Irish mythological hero who appears in the stories of the Ulster Cycle, as well as in Scottish and Manx folklore. He is believed to be an incarnation of the god Lugh, who is also his father. His mother is the mortal Deichtine, sister of Conchobar mac Nessa. Born Sétanta, he gained his better-known name as a child, after killing Culann's fierce guard-dog in self-defence and offered to take its place until a replacement could be reared. At the age of seventeen he defended Ulster single-handedly against the armies of queen Medb of Connacht in the famous Táin Bó Cúailnge ("Cattle Raid of Cooley"). It was prophesied that his great deeds would give him everlasting fame, but his life would be a short one. He is known for his terrifying battle frenzy, or ríastrad (translated by Thomas Kinsella as "warp spasm" and by Ciaran Carson as "torque"), in which he becomes an unrecognisable monster who knows neither friend nor foe. He fights from his chariot, driven by his loyal charioteer Láeg and drawn by his horses, Liath Macha and Dub Sainglend. In more modern times, Cú Chulainn is more often referred to as the "Hound of Ulster" TAGS: folklore, fairy tales, celtic myths, legends, children’s stories, fables, celt, Ireland, Irish, Scotland, Isle of Man, Conor, king of Ulster, queen meave, woman-seer, Setanta, boy-corps, king conor, Cuchulain, arms, first feats, championship, adventures, shadow land, woo, wife, brown bull, cooley, refuse, plucking out, four pronged pole, deer, ill-luck, etarcomal, fate, spits, holly wood, combat, ferdia, fall, awake, end, rising out, humbling, swan maidens, fairy land, fairyland, Deirdre, contentions, contend, bring up, sleep wanderer, wiles of king conor, sorrowful, death, usna’s sons, son, conla, hound at bay, fame, outlive, life, red rout, queen Medb, Connacht, Lugh, father, Conchobar mac Nessa, Táin Bó Cúailnge, Cattle Raid of Cooley, charioteer, Laeg, Liath Macha, Dub Sainglend
