The Hebrew name of God in the holy writings is El Shaddai. “El” means “God Creator” and “Shaddai” means “Almighty.” El Shaddai is the name of God. Although we read other names given to God in the Old Testament, none of those names are the true name of God. Names such as Lord, Yahweh, and Jehovah were never spoken or pronounced in Israel in the entire Old Testament as their god. Before the Kingdom of Judah fell, El Shaddai warns the Judeans that their false prophets have changed his name with Baal, which is the same name as Lord. “And it shall be at that day,” says El Shaddai, “that you shall call Me Ishi (my beloved) and shall call Me no more Baali (my lord). For I will take away the names of the Baalim (lords) gods out of their mouth and they shall no more be mentioned by their name.”

A novel approach to Israelite kinship, arguing that maternal kinship bonds played key social, economic, and political roles for a son who aspired to inherit his father’s household Upending traditional scholarship on patrilineal genealogy, Cynthia Chapman draws on twenty years of research to uncover an underappreciated yet socially significant kinship unit in the Bible: “the house of the mother.” In households where a man had two or more wives, siblings born to the same mother worked to promote and protect one another’s interests. Revealing the hierarchies of the maternal houses and political divisions within the national house of Israel, this book provides us with a nuanced understanding of domestic and political life in ancient Israel.

El Shaddai is the story of God and mankind, specifically of God’s choosing a particular family to abide with and form a relationship with as an example for all of mankind. It is the story of the nature, vision, and purpose of God. And it is the story of one member of this family, Jacob, far more sinner than saint, as he literally wrestled to understand what having that relationship with God would mean to him, to his people, indeed to all of humanity, and perhaps to God himself.

"I find your offer sir, to be an agreeable one." This signaled to the crowd that there would not be a hanging, and many began to sullenly walk away upon being denied the once in a lifetime opportunity of seeing an infant strangled: from Bessie's Smile Life often produces monumental pain and suffering, and yet it is so easy for too many of us to ignore the pain of others we see around us. Five Unexpected Endings is a collection of five short stories, which depict various characters from various backgrounds who all have one thing in common: They are part of the human race. The stories are meant to entertain, but they are also intended to show that we all have the same fears, insecurities, needs, and desires. We must always consider those we are on the planet with, and we must never consider anyone as less important than we are. Five Unexpected Endings is meant to uplift and comfort, but it is also meant to warn that there are consequences when we do not respect the humanity of our fellow man.
