Over 700 Biographical Listings. The Definitive Who's Who from the Golden Age of Piracy. They say "dead men tell no tales." That's certainly true, but it doesn't mean that tales can not be told about those men. In 1923 Philip Gosse found himself rummaging through his local library looking for information about pirates and buccaneers. To his amazement, there was little to be found about, as he puts it, "...this group of picturesque, if often unseemly, persons." Certainly there was information about the "stars" of that era like William Kidd, Edward Teach (Blackbeard), and John Avery. There was even a bit about buccaneers like Sir Henry Morgan. But there was little or nothing about the hundreds of lesser-known, but equally important, individuals who populated that era. He resolved to cure that problem, and the result was this book. Here you will find listings for over 700 men and women who took part in the great Golden Age of Piracy. There are no mythical characters. Every person listed actually lived and, near as can be determined, did the things-good and bad-that are imputed to them. If you have even a remote interest in that collection of sea-adventurers we call "Pirates". This book is your indespensible guide.

This is not a book about history. It IS history. First published in 1859, it is literally a snapshot of the language used by the 18th and 19th Century common man. With it, you can enter into his world as he or she saw it, felt it and expressed it. No novel, no history book can or will ever give you that perspective. Tell me: . If you knew someplace was a "knocking shop" would you go in? . Would an 18th Century seaman drink a couple of "scotches" or whistle at them? . Is "casting up your accounts" something a business person would do? . Would you resort to "chariot buzzing" to build-up your supply of "chinkers"? . Would you eat a "Sharp's-Alley" chicken? Some of the definitions are tragic and some are outrageously funny. But if you want to genuinely understand their world-if you want to understand the world portrayed in books by Jane Austin, C.S. Forester, Patrick O'Brian or Dudley Pope-you need this book by your side. This work is based on John Camden Hotten's 1860 edition of A Dictionary of Modern Slang, Cant, and Vulgar Words.

Almost 800 pages . 12,764 Definitions. The Most Complete Reference of Its Kind It's one thing to compile a dictionary of nautical terms from the Age of Sail; but it's quite another when the people doing the compiling actually lived them. That is exactly the situation in The Sailor's Word. William Henry Smyth (1788-1865) was in the Royal Navy for over 25 years, rising from a ship's boy on a West India merchantman to a Royal Navy Admiral. In addition to commanding several Royal Navy ships, he became world famous as a hydrographer (some of his charts were still in use in the 1960's), and as an astronomer (he eventually became president of the Royal Astronomical Society). The last years of his life, however, were spent compiling The Sailor's Word from his vast storehouse of nautical experience; but he died before he could see it published. His family decided to go forth with the publication of his final work. Their selection of an editor couldn't have been better: Sir Edward Belcher (1799-1877). Sir Edward was a Royal Navy officer with even more experience than Smyth. In his 40 years of service he captained numerous ships and generated a well-deserved reputation as a naval surveyor. His final command was of the unsuccessful expedition to find the missing and ill-fated explorer, Sir John Franklin. A cousin of Frederick Marryat, it can be plausibly argued that his novel, Horatio Howard Brenton, was the real model for C.S. Forester's Horatio Hornblower. If you want to understand modern nautical fiction, you have to understand the language they used and the way they actually used it-not the way you think they used it.

You know about the fleets of Britain, France, Spain, and America; but did you know that some of the most formidable naval forces in history were not European at all? As the 16th Century opened, the moors had been driven out of Spain and cast onto the barren shores of north Africa. Driven by a combination of greed, desperation, and religious fanaticism, they took to the seas and formed themselves into fleets of pirates. These, however, were not the free-lance murdering marauders of a later age These were well-organized, well-led, well-disciplined, nautical shock troops. For almost 100 years they menaced the Mediterranean at will. When booty was scarce at sea, they simply went ashore and took what they wanted: gold, silver, jewels and, most of all, people as slaves. From 1492 to 1580 they defied Charles V, Philip II, 13 consecutive Popes, and the best soldiers and sailors that Spain, Venice, Genoa, Catalonia and France could throw against them. This then is the story of the era known as The Grand Period of the Muslim Corsairs. More specifically, it is the story of three leaders: Kheyr-ed-Din Barbarossa, Dragut Reis, and Ali Basha. It goes without saying that they were each stained with the blood of a thousand crimes and acts of cruelty. Nevertheless, in each, there was a spark of genius that helped shape the course of history."
