Excerpt from The King's Council in the North A few words of explanation on one or two points seem called for. Especially, it seems necessary to explain why so much political history has been included in a work dealing primarily with a law-court. This is due to the dual character of the Council in the North, its administrative responsibility constantly leading to an extension of its judicial powers, and resentment at its governmental action as constantly finding expression in opposition to its judicial authority. Some reference to the political history of the North during the period of the Council's existence was therefore necessary. Unfortunately, the standard works dealing with the period seldom do more than refer to events in the North, and usually the references are derived from Chronicles and other secondary authorities. My own researches having convinced me that these authorities are not always to be trusted, I was faced with these alternatives: either to write a history of the Council as a law-court with references to political history which must appear dogmatic because they implied views differing in many ways from those generally received, which yet were not supported by a reasoned statement of the evidence; or to write an account of the political history of the North during the period under consideration as well as an account of the Council itself. At first I chose the former alternative, and it was a history of the Council as a law-court that I submitted to the University of London for the degree of Doctor of Literature in 1911. Excerpt from The King's Council in England During the Middle Ages About ten years ago the subject of this work was first suggested to me as a topic for investigation by the late Professor Charles Gross, whose learning was ever devoted to the inspiration and guidance of students in his chosen field. The material aid and encouragement which was generously given by my former friend, especially during the earlier stages of the study, I have sought to recognize in the dedication of this book. Excerpt from On Some Antiquities in the Neighbourhood of Dunecht House Aberdeenshire It was known to the archaeologist that there were ogam inscriptions in the district, two Of them being among the most important in Caledonia; and that within an easy motor drive there was a minuscule inscription of six lines Of which no satisfactory explanation had been given. This inscription they had visited in a previous year. Further, the quick eye Of the hostess of Dunecht had caught sight of some curious sculptures on a stone by the road-side on the way to the minus cule inscription; and other like stones in the neighbourhood had been shewn in Stuart's two volumes of Sculptural Stones of Scotland. The suggestion was then made that for the sake of visitors at Dunecht a sort Of guide book should be prepared, giving some simple description of the several Objects and their meaning and uses. The history of the Scottish monarchy is a long tale of triumph over adversity, characterised by the personal achievements of remarkable rulers who transformed their fragile kingdom into the master of northern Britain. The Kings and Queens of Scotland charts that process, from the earliest Scots and Pictish kings of around ad 400 through to the union of parliaments in 1707, tracing it through the lives of the men and women whose ambitions drove it forward on the often rocky path from its semi-mythical foundations to its integration into the Stewart kingdom of Great Britain. It is a route waymarked with such towering personalities as Macbeth, Robert the Bruce and Mary Queen of Scots, but directed also by a host of less well-known figures such as David I, who extended his kingdom almost to the gates of York, and James IV, builder of the finest navy in northern Europe. Their will and ambition, successes and failures not only shaped modern Scotland, but have left their mark throughout the British Isles and the wider world.

Excerpt from An Historical Account of the Rise and Development of Presbyterianism in Scotland Throughout the whole history of the Reformed Church in Scotland one of the most outstanding features will be found to be the overwhelming desire to maintain the independence of the Church from all secular control, and the most characteristic feature of the disputes which went on during the reigns of the Stewart Kings (especially James VI and I, and Charles I), was the failure of those Monarchs to appreciate the Scottish sentiments Of Patriotism, Protestantism and Freedom.
