Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 85: February 15, 1923 When I was about sixteen years of age I became possessed of a very strong desire to see other countries. My mind was directed towards New Zealand but seeing an advertisement in a Canadian newspaper, I applied for the position and secured it. Twelve years next March I sailed from Liverpool on the Empress of Ireland. My destination was Cardston, in the Province of Alberta. I knew nothing whatever concerning the town or its inhabitants. I cannot describe my feelings - feelings of surprise and disappointment - wi]en I found myself in a Mormon com munity. This brought about a bad attack of home-sickness, and if I had had the means I would have at once returned to England. When my people heard the news, they were almost as greatly alarmed as they would have been if they had heard that I had been cast off on an island inhabited by cannibals. I decided, however, to make the best of the situation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 85: April 26, 1923 In this connection may be mentioned an interesting report which has only just appeared in the Continental Daily Mail ot' the 27th March last, on the subject of motor fuel being manufactured from rubbish, tons of waste material being annually dealt with to produce about half a million gallons of alcohol, suitable for motor spirit and acetic acid. The raw material in this case is said to be the waste hops which brewers have to pay to have carted away. The newspaper article closes by stating that apart from the motor spirit yielded, some cubic feet of gas suitable for internal combustion engines is included in the treatment of a ton of waste material. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 85: June 21, 1923 AT special meetings held about five months ago with groups of elders in the British mission, three leading principles were set forth, the adopting of which seemed essential to the proper advancement of the work of the Lord in the various conferences. These were Responsibility, Unity, and Activity. All three of these virtues, it was thought, were applicable alike to mission aries and to the local Church membership. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 85: February 1, 1923 Here a digression is made to request our readers to think out a Yankee-like guess as to how many of the boys about fifteen years of age with whom they are acquainted would have con ducted themselves as modestly and sensibly as Joseph Smith did, had they been in his circumstances and tempted as he was Does it not appeal to us all as true that the average boy of that age would give way to unbearable pride and egotism 'p The writer is of the opinion that but few boys out of a multitude would con tent themselves for a single day longer to engage in the drudgery of farm life or endure uncomplainingly the hardships of a common laborer's toil. The average boy, we confidently say, would not do it; but since Joseph Smith did do it, there is in that fact all the evidences needed to make him occupy a position in the view of all clear-visioned people as a boy far above the average in some of the leading essentials of a strong and noble character. All, however, that has heretofore been said in these remarks concerning the powerful temptations which Joseph Smith had to meet and overcome, if he was not to become puffed up with in ordinate vain-glory and conceit, and obsessed with thoughts of his tremendous importance among the mighty ones of this earth is not all that is be said along this same line. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 85: July 19, 1923 God bless you, as He blessed Ephraim, and in your seed many of the nations of the earth will be blessed. Through them God will work out his mighty plans, many of which are not yet disclosed; and the kingdom of God will roll on and the truth will be triumph ant and darkness will be banished and the reign of evil will cease. Satan will be bound and his hosts with him, and the wicked will not continue to flourish. The righteous will prevail and the king dom and government of God which he has set up will cover the earth until the very earth itself having filled the law of its being, will be resurrected and clothed upon with the glory of God, and Christ will be its king. God bless you, brethren and sisters. May His peace abide with you and be in your homes, surround your homes with everything that is good, bright, lovely and comfortable. Teach your child ren in kindness to come up in the way that God Almighty has established and that is going to prevail. It is going to be the kingdom. The kingdoms of this world will become the kingdom of our God and His Christ, and He will reign forever and ever. May all be found worthy to reign with Him in glory, through Jesus Christ. Amen.
