The saxophone is a globally popular instrument, often closely associated with renowned players such as Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, or more recently, Kenny G. Less well known, however, is the historical presence of women saxophonists in the nineteenth century, shortly after the instrument’s invention. Elise Hall (1853–1924), a prominent wealthy socialite in Boston at the turn of the twentieth century, defied social norms by mastering the saxophone, an unconventional instrument for a woman of her time. Despite her career’s profound impact, Elise Hall remains relatively obscure in broader music communities. Her untiring work as an impresario, patron, and performer made a significant mark on the history of the instrument. Yet these contributions have been historically undervalued, largely due to gender bias. This collection of essays, written by mainly women saxophonists/scholars, re-evaluates Elise Hall’s legacy beyond a discrete history, updating the narrative by highlighting the ways in which her identity and the saxophone itself have influenced historical accounts. By analyzing the sociocultural factors surrounding this innovative musician through a contemporary lens, the contributors challenge previously held narratives shaped by patriarchal structures and collectively affirm her place as one of the pioneers in the history of the saxophone.

This monograph offers factual information on the composer as well as insights into his 16th-century and modern reception, a survey of the sources of his music, and a discussion of the thorny issue of authorship. Willem Elders, one of the most distinguished scholars of Josquin's music, also discusses the influence of Gregorian chant as a source of inspiration and explains the various aspects of Josquin's symbolic language. Each individual work (including some of those in the old Josquin edition now considered inauthentic) receives a short discussion of relevant contextual aspects and interesting musical features. Ranges and lengths are given for each work. The style is adapted to the professional musicologist as well as to the 'music lover' and performer. Includes 45 figures and 90 musical examples

In his old home in Oklahoma, Mark Williams mourns for the members of his family who were lost on the infamous Trail of Tears. He mourns for his brother and his two young daughters, and he longs to know what happened to his parents and his little sister, Walela, as he prays for answers in the ghostly moonlight. In Missouri, under the same pale moonlight, Lela Schmidt prays in memory of the parents, also lost on the Trail of Tears. She remembers her brothers, her heart wrenched by the mystery of their fate. Did they reach the Indian Territory safely all those years ago, or were they too gripped by the cold hand of death on the long journey west? She'd barely escaped that gruesome fate herself, rescued by Fredrik Schmidt. They have since shared a secret that must never be told. The story of Fredrik and Lela began in Hummingbird and continued through Until Next We Meet. Rejoin their journey of love, faith, and courage in The Legacy.
