Excerpt from The Life and Art of William Merritt Chase The personal reminiscences of my husband which I have been able to offer Miss Roof to add to her material date from the time of his return from Munich. I went with my older sisters to the academy exhibition of 1878, where his picture Ready for the Ride was shown, and we were all very anxious to meet the young painter after seeing it. The canvas, it will be remembered, made quite a sensation in art circles. When F. S. Church, already a friend of the family, brought William M. Chase to the house we were all very much excited over the event. But out of all my memories of that early association - and Mr. Chase was a frequent visitor at our house - I can recall very few things that he ever told us of his early life. I suppose there were two reasons for this. In the first place, Mr. Chase had never at any time any tendency to talk about himself. He disliked it extremely and was always embarrassed when he found himself the subject of conversation. The other reason is that my husband was interested in art to such an extent that other things really made very little impression upon him. Excerpt from The Life and Art of William Merritt Chase Miss Katharine Roof was at one time one of his pupils. Mr. Chase always felt that she had the real and right appreciation of art - the principles and feeling of art, not facts about it - and an especially sympathetic un derstanding of his own work. Above all, she has what he especially valued, the painter's standpoint, which is the exact opposite of the literary attitude, toward art. In his last illness, when the subject of his biography was mentioned, Mr. Chase said more than once that he wished she might write it, and I am glad indeed that his wish, which was also my own, has been fulfilled. A landmark retrospective that examines William Merritt Chase and his lasting contribution to the history of modern art The history of modern art owes a great debt to William Merritt Chase (1849-1916), one of America's influential artists and educators. Chase was a leading member of the international artistic avant-garde and was best known for his mastery of a wide range of subjects in oil and pastel, including figures, landscapes, urban park scenes, interiors, and portraits. As a teacher and founder of the Shinnecock Summer School of Art and the New York School of Art, Chase mentored a new generation of modernists, including Edward Hopper, Georgia O'Keeffe, and Joseph Stella. A century after his death, the breadth and richness of Chase's career are celebrated in this beautifully illustrated publication. Five essays by prominent scholars of American art offer new insights into Chase's multi-faceted artistic practice and his position in the international cultural climate at the turn of the 20th century.

The first in a beautiful four-volume complete catalogue of all known works by the beloved American artist William Merritt Chase A perennial favorite of museum visitors, the works of William Merritt Chase (1849-1916) embody the quintessential characteristics of American Impressionism: outdoor landscapes, a colorful palette, and an energetic brushstroke. He was also a portrait painter of the first rank, a master of still life, a renowned teacher, and a leader of artists' societies. This gorgeous book, the first of a four-volume definitive catalogue, features Chase's stunning paintings in pastel, which constitute a major and previously understudied body of work by the artist; monotypes; painted tiles and plates; watercolors; and prints. Reconstructing Chase's oeuvre is a daunting task, as the artist left few records of any kind, and no documentation of his individual works exists. Furthermore, Chase's paintings and pastels have been forged in great numbers throughout the years, and many of these works still surface on the art market. Making this long-awaited volume even more valuable is a list of every known exhibition of Chase's work during the artist's lifetime, selected examples of major post-1917 exhibitions, and an essay on Chase's innovative pastel technique.
