Includes 12 illustrations The name of Horatio Nelson still rings across the United Kingdom, and further afield, as a great and gallant naval hero worthy of remembrance through the ages, his statue still stands atop a lofty column in one of the busiest squares in the world. However Nelson was only one of many heroes that fought the French Navy during the Napoleonic Wars, without whom the outcome may have been very different. Never seeking the public acclaim craved by his close friend and comrade Horatio Nelson, Cuthbert Collingwood was one such hero who stood with the great Admiral from the Nile to the former’s death at the Battle of Trafalgar. Brave, determined, a great friend to the sailor’s under his command, Collingwood was instrumental in defeating the French and he took command of the British Fleet after Trafalgar. Almost never ashore, his constant battles with the French along with exhausting blockade duties drove him into an early grave in 1810. In this excellent biography, penned by noted naval author William Clark Russell the full scope of the exploits, adventures and victories of Admiral Collingwood are recounted in vivid detail.

Figure seventy or eighty sail of ships: many of them heavy, lumbering, round-bowed old merchantmen, so shaped in beam and length that they might have been built by the league and sawed off as customers required them. A dozen ships at a time would be lagging; the naval officer in command would signal them--but to no purpose: the sour old merchant skipper, wrapped up in pilotcloth, eyed the epaulet askant, and sulkily went to work to give as much trouble as possible. Meanwhile there was not only an enemy's fleet to be feared, but swarms of privateersmen who hovered on the skirts of the slow-sailing commercial craft, cutting off one after another in the dead of night, and often in the full glare of day, yet with such agility, with such skilful ocean hotham'S action with the french. 47 manoeuvring, as to keep the naval officer sweeping the sea-line with a telescope at his eye in perplexity, until the sadden staggering away of the captured vessel on an easy bowline left him in no doubt as to what had happened. Having filled his fresh-water casks at St. Fiorenzo, at which place the Excellent had arrived on the 23rd August, 1795, Collingwood sailed for Leghorn on the 27th, and joined the fleet under Admiral Hotham. In a letter to Sir Edward Blackett, dated at this port, he thus refers to the...

When Admiral Mahan, passed away in 1914, his ideas and thoughts lived on in his writings, which spanned the naval strategy of his own times and the lessons learnt from history. They are still read at the modern naval academies and the ideas permeate the teachings at Annapolis. A flag officer in the U.S. Navy who fought during the American civil war for the Union forces, his works have gained a fame that makes him the foremost of the naval historians of the late 1800’s. Of enduring interest is his two volume history of Horatio Nelson, the hero of the Royal Navy and the battle of Trafalgar. An epic and tragic figure in age that abounds with them, the victor of Trafalgar who never lived past that day to see his fame endure is a favourite for biographies, however few are as balanced and detailed as Mahan’s. The second volume of the biography focuses on the years 1800 to 1805, which were an exceptionally trying and busy time for all Royal Navy officers, but also pivotal to Nelson’s development and led to his masterful action at Trafalgar. Nelson’s role in the pre-emptive strike at the Danish fleet at Copenhagen, and his anger nearly boils over with superiors who he considers not forward-thinking or aggressive enough in what was a conservative arm of the forces. Nelson’s life at home is not ignored or passed over and his life with Lady Hamilton and their daughter Horatia are covered although in less details than modern biographies. Finally the epic, tragic and brilliant battle of Trafalgar which ended the French hopes of global dominance by sea but also Nelson’s life.
