Not illustrated. 1908 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XV The sun was already setting when Cochrane's force filed out of the jungle on to the beach just below Oras. The march had been a long and weary one, unmarked by any special incident, though at every stage boudjons had boomed out with maddening regularity. "Oras was a big place of some ten thousand people," remarked the captain. "You will see in a moment how much of it the pulajanes left. That's Coote's camp, in the old court-house.--Halt!--Lend me your glasses, Mr. North. We must go carefully, or they may shoot at us. There are a lot of them round the gateway, playing cards or something, but I don't see a sentry. Ah, there he is, on that bit of a platform--with a chair to sit on! He's smoking, too, I think, and hasn't seen us yet.--Now he has. --Bugler.--Lie down, men, lie down," he shouted suddenly, as a bullet whistled overhead. "They are all scurrying in. We shall have a volley next, before we know where we are. I'll flag them," and he jumped on to a small mound, waving his handkerchief vigorously, just as a ragged volley squibbed out from the building. Fortunately, however, the shooting was very wild, and a moment later the " Cease fire " on a bugle showed that his signal had been seen. He turned to Derek with a wry smile. "It's a good beginning. They are fairly rattled already. We shall have a lively trip. Neither Coote nor I can command the other, as we belong to entirely different services, and, even if we don't squabble, our soldiers will do so all the time;" then he ordered the men to fall in again, and strode at their head towards the Scouts' quarters. Three white men came forward to meet them, two in regulation field kit, the other, a short, powerfully-built youngster, in a white canvas shirt and corduroy breeches, ...

When Charles Ohiyesa Eastman, a degreed Dakota physician with an East Coast university education, met Elaine Goodale, a teacher and supervisor of education among the Sioux, they were about to witness one of the worst massacres in U.S. history: the 1890 Wounded Knee Massacre. As Charles and Elaine witnessed the horror, they formed a bond that would carry them across the United States as they become advocates for Native Americans, whistle-blowing the corruption and racism of the nation’s Native American policies. They used their lives to fight for citizenship and equal rights for indigenous people. Charles built a national organization of and for Native Americans that paralleled the NAACP. He brought Indian ways into the popular scouting movement. They each wrote eleven books, lobbied Congress, made speeches, wrote articles, and protested the steady erosion of indigenous rights and resources. In this double biography, social and political history combine to paint vivid pictures of the time. Gretchen Cassel Eick deftly connects the experiences and responses of Native Americans with those of African Americans and white progressives during the period from the Civil War to World War II. In addition, tensions between the Eastmans mirror the dilemmas of gender, cultural pluralism, and the ethnic differences that Charles and Elaine faced as they worked to make a nation care about Native American impoverishment. The Eastmans’ story is a national story, but it is also intensely personal. It reveals the price American reformers paid for their activism and the cost exacted for American citizenship. This thoughtful book brings a bleak chapter in American history alive and will cause readers to think about the connections between Charles and Elaine’s time and ours.

Excerpt from The Little Brother: A Story of Tramp Life Scattered along among the many ambitious cities that dot the great Western railway lines are little villages that seem to have grown up out of the black prairie mud, under some impulse of enterprise that has long since subsided, and left a few regular streets, a few business blocks, two or three small white churches, and perhaps twoscore respectable dwelling-houses. One such town, bearing a historic Indian name, has been saved from desolation and decay, possibly by the county organization, which early in the forties dignified it with a court-house and made it the seat of the county government. Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold.
