When the Little Red Engine was to be replaced by a diesel engine and sent to scrap, everyone was sad, but it soon cheered up when it was bought by the Maharajah and sent to India, where it saw many amazing and wonderful things on its travels.

After an adventurous journey to India the Little Red Engine and Sam wait in a siding for the Maharajah's Royal command to send them home. Eventually they have to earn their money, little by little, to return to their beloved Taddlecombe.

When the Little Red Engine was chosen to be part of a grand exhibition in London, it was very proud. The Little Red Engine saw all the sights and could hardly believe the wonderful buildings and machines, but who was the children's favourite?
