The Log School House On The Columbia

'The Log School-House on the Columbia' is a semi-fictional novel about the American Settlers era by Hezekiah Butterworth. The author used information from interviews that he did with early pioneers who settled in the Rockies and on to the Columbia River to create an entirely new story that is meant to convey the relationship between the European settlers and the Native Americans during that time. Several characters that play a major part in the book are Gretchen, a German orphan girl; Mrs. Woods, who takes care of her; and Marlowe Mann, the schoolmaster who intends to assist the Native Americans by being a missionary.

This book is a charming memoir of the author's childhood in a small pioneer community in Oregon in the mid-19th century. It focuses on the role of education in shaping the community's values and aspirations, and it includes vivid descriptions of the log schoolhouse where Butterworth received his early schooling. Hezekiah Butterworth (1839-1905) was a wellknown writer of books for young people, and a poet. Born in Warren, Rhode Island, he was platform lecturer, speaking on education, hymnology, and his travels, which included tours in Europe, South America, Cuba and Canada. Among the works of Butterworth, most of them books for boys, are several volumes of Zig-Zag Journeys, The Knight of Liberty, In the Boyhood of Lincoln, Great Composers, The Patriot Schoolmaster, Songs of History, Poems and Ballads and Boys of Greenway Court, together with several cantatas.
