The Major Linguistic Aspects Of Chicano English And Its Implications For Language Teaching

First paragraph defines and describes Chicano English. The main part of this paper is divided into two chapters - the first deals with linguistic aspects of ChE, and the second discusses possible ways to integrate the topic “Chicano English” into English lessons in German secondary schools. The first chapter of the main part provides an overview of the phonology of Chicano English, focusing on its characteristic phonetic features. Next, in the following chapter, syntactic, semantic and pragmatic features of Chicano English are covered. The second part of this paper explores the possibilities to integrate the topic “Chicano English” into English lessons in German secondary schools, introducing a teaching unit for German Grammar school students in Year 11. Besides, this paragraph discusses the importance and the relevance of this topic for developing student’s awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity of English. The final chapter provides a brief summary of the key points of this paper.

Chicano English can rightly be said to be, in its different varieties, the most widespread ethnic dialect of U.S. English, spoken by large sections of the population in the American Southwest. It represents a type of speech referred to by E. Haugen as a ‘bilingual’ dialect, having developed out of a stable Spanish-English setting. In their book, the authors provide a comprehensive examination of Chicano English, devoting particular emphasis to the social factors determining its characteristic features and uses. Special attention is given to the question of homogeneity as against ordered variation within Chicano English, to features of pronunciation and grammar, to its communicative functions, to the evaluative attitudes of its speakers and others and, finally, to its uses in literature and the media. In spite of its importance, Chicano English has been insufficiently documented; this monograph is intended to contribute towards redressing the balance.

These essays and studies are not designed to give an overview of English Language and literature. They are, however, a good inspiration for the occupation with the manyfold fields of Anglistics.

This text provides an overview of bi- and multilingualism as a worldwide phenomenon. To this end, the book takes the Chicano-Latino community of Southern California, where Spanish-English bilingualism has over a century and a half of history, and presents a detailed case study, thereby situating the community in a much broader social context. Spanish is the second most-widely spoken language in the U.S. after English, yet, for the most part, its speakers form a language minority that essentially lacks the social, political, and educational support necessary to derive the many cognitive, socioeconomic, and educational benefits that proficient bilingualism can provide. The issues facing Spanish-English bilinguals in the Los Angeles area are relevant to nearly every bi- and multilingual community irrespective of nation, language, and/or ethnicity.

This book describes dialect differences in American English and their impact on education and everyday life. It explores some of the major issues that confront educational practitioners and suggests what practitioners can do to recognize students’ language abilities, support their language development, and expand their knowledge about dialects. Topics addressed include: *popular concerns about the nature of language variation; *characteristic structures of different dialects; *various interactive patterns characteristic of social groups; *the school impacts of dialect differences in speaking, writing, and reading, including questions about teaching Standard English; and *the value of dialect education in schools to enable students to understand dialects as natural and normal language phenomena. Changes in the Second Edition: In this edition the authors reconsider and expand their discussion of many of the issues addressed in the first edition and in other of their earlier works, taking into account especially the research on dialects and publications for audiences beyond linguistics that have appeared since the first edition. This edition is offered as an updated report on the state of language variation and education in the United States. Dialects in Schools and Communities is rooted in questions that have arisen in workshops, surveys, classes, discussion groups, and conversations with practitioners and teacher educators. It is thus intended to address important needs in a range of educational and related service fields. As an overview of current empirical research, it synthesizes current understandings and provides key references—in this sense it is a kind of translation and interpretation in which the authors’ goal is to bring together the practical concerns of educators and the vantage point of sociolinguistics. No background in linguistics or sociolinguistics is assumed on the part of the reader. This volume is intended for teacher interns and practicing teachers in elementary and secondary schools; early childhood specialists; specialists in reading and writing; speech/language pathologists; special education teachers; and students in various language specialties.

The first section enables the reader to acquire an understanding of the social and educational issues involved in establishing a role for any given variety of Chicano speech. The second section provides research about Chicano Spanish and English, their distribution, characteristics, and pertinent potential for educational applications. The reader can then proceed to section three and analyze instructional issues, suggested applications, and options for Chicano speech in the bilingual classroom.
