National Book Critics Circle Award Finalist (Biography) New York Times Critics’ Best of the Year One of NPR's Great Reads of 2018 A Newsweek Best Nonfiction Book of the Year With wry humor, Shakespearean profundity, and trenchant insight, Yunte Huang brings to life the story of America’s most famous nineteenth-century Siamese twins. Nearly a decade after his triumphant Charlie Chan biography, Yunte Huang returns with this long-awaited portrait of Chang and Eng Bunker (1811–1874), twins conjoined at the sternum by a band of cartilage and a fused liver, who were “discovered” in Siam by a British merchant in 1824. Bringing an Asian American perspective to this almost implausible story, Huang depicts the twins, arriving in Boston in 1829, first as museum exhibits but later as financially savvy showmen who gained their freedom and traveled the backroads of rural America to bring “entertainment” to the Jacksonian mobs. Their rise from subhuman, freak-show celebrities to rich southern gentry; their marriage to two white sisters, resulting in twenty-one children; and their owning of slaves, is here not just another sensational biography but a Hawthorne-like excavation of America’s historical penchant for finding feast in the abnormal, for tyrannizing the “other”—a tradition that, as Huang reveals, becomes inseparable from American history itself.

Elinor M. Brent-Dyer was born Gladys Eleanor May Dyer on April 6, 1894 in South Shields, in the northeast of England. She wrote over a hundred books of children’s literature during her life. From lower middle-class roots, she went to a small private school and became a teacher after attending the City of Leeds Training College. As a teacher, she worked at both public and private schools, and even as a governess. She had an interest in the theater, and her first book Gerry Goes to School (the first in her La Rochelle series) was written in 1922 --for the child actress Hazel Bainbridge. About this time, inspired by a vacation to the Austrian Alps, she wrote The School at the Chalet in 1923 (the first in her Chalet School series). Brent-Dyer continued to teach and tried rather unsuccessfully to run her own school from 1938 to 1948. After this, she quit teaching but continued writing until her death on September 20, 1969 in Redhill, Surrey.

Tensions between the twins worsen, when the mysterious, Haveltre, is accidentally opened and the two are pulled away from their lives and into a realm of death and despair. Led by their guardian, Marques, the twins must face the evil that wishes to destroy the Ezidian Realm and invade Earth. Through, the Ezidian Realm they meet elves and dwarven ghosts. Face goblins and Orcs. They fight their way through swamps, forests, and some of the most treacherous landscapes. All while trying, to work together. The evil goblin, King Goula, will do whatever it takes to stop the Myserian Seals from being closed. The evil King is the largest and the most ruthless of all the goblin race. He plots his conquest of the Ezidian Realm and plans his invasion of Earth. The only thing he fears is the hands of fate. The twins learn what they must and train whenever possible. Marques teaches them how to harness their vessels and trains them in the art of weaponry, but if he can't get the two to work together, then both worlds will be doomed. Which, means if the hands of fate can't put their stubbornness aside, they may never see home again.
