The 1960s and early 70s saw the evolution of Frontier Myths even as scholars were renouncing the interpretive value of myths themselves. Works like Joe Haldeman’s The Forever War exemplified that rejection using his experiences during the Vietnam War to illustrate the problematic consequences of simple mythic idealism. Simultaneously, Americans were playing with expanded and revised versions of familiar Frontier Myths, though in a contemporary context, through NASA’s lunar missions, Star Trek, and Gerard K. O’Neill’s High Frontier. This book examines the reasons behind the exclusion of Frontier Myths to the periphery of scholarly discourse, and endeavors to build a new model for understanding their enduring significance. This model connects NASA’s failed attempts to recycle earlier myths, wholesale, to Star Trek’s revision of those myths and rejection of the idea of a frontier paradise, to O’Neill’s desire to realize such a paradise in Earth’s orbit. This new synthesis defies the negative connotations of Frontier Myths during the 1960s and 70s and attempts to resuscitate them for relevance in the modern academic context.

The Next Frontier of Restaurant Management brings together the latest research in hospitality studies to offer students, hospitality executives, and restaurant managers the best practices for restaurant success. Alex M. Susskind and Mark Maynard draw on their experiences as a hospitality educator and a restaurant industry leader, respectively, to guide readers through innovative articles that address specific aspects of restaurant management: * Creating and preserving a healthy company culture * Developing and upholding standards of service * Successfully navigating guest complaints to promote loyalty * Creating a desirable (and profitable) ambiance * Harnessing technology to improve guest and employee experiences * Mentoring employees Maynard and Susskind detail the implementation of effective customer management and staff training, design elements such as seating and lighting, the innovative use of data to improve the guest experience, and both consumer-oriented and operation-based technologies. They conclude with a discussion of the human factor that is the foundation of the hospitality industry and the importance of a healthy workplace culture. As Susskind and Maynard show, successful restaurants don't happen by accident.

Combines the latest trends in spectrum sharing, both from a research and a standards/regulation/experimental standpoint Written by noted professionals from academia, industry, and research labs, this unique book provides a comprehensive treatment of the principles and architectures for spectrum sharing in order to help with the existing and future spectrum crunch issues. It presents readers with the most current standardization trends, including CEPT / CEE, eLSA, CBRS, MulteFire, LTE-Unlicensed (LTE-U), LTE WLAN integration with Internet Protocol security tunnel (LWIP), and LTE/Wi-Fi aggregation (LWA), and offers substantial trials and experimental results, as well as system-level performance evaluation results. The book also includes a chapter focusing on spectrum policy reinforcement and another on the economics of spectrum sharing. Beginning with the historic form of cognitive radio, Spectrum Sharing: The Next Frontier in Wireless Networks continues with current standardized forms of spectrum sharing, and reviews all of the technical ingredients that may arise in spectrum sharing approaches. It also looks at policy and implementation aspects and ponders the future of the field. White spaces and data base-assisted spectrum sharing are discussed, as well as the licensed shared access approach and cooperative communication techniques. The book also covers reciprocity-based beam forming techniques for spectrum sharing in MIMO networks; resource allocation for shared spectrum networks; large scale wireless spectrum monitoring; and much more. Contains all the latest standardization trends, such as CEPT / ECC, eLSA, CBRS, MulteFire, LTE-Unlicensed (LTE-U), LTE WLAN integration with Internet Protocol security tunnel (LWIP) and LTE/Wi-Fi aggregation (LWA) Presents a number of emerging technologies for future spectrum sharing (collaborative sensing, cooperative communication, reciprocity-based beamforming, etc.), as well as novel spectrum sharing paradigms (e.g. in full duplex and radar systems) Includes substantial trials and experimental results, as well as system-level performance evaluation results Contains a dedicated chapter on spectrum policy reinforcement and one on the economics of spectrum sharing Edited by experts in the field, and featuring contributions by respected professionals in the field world wide Spectrum Sharing: The Next Frontier in Wireless Networks is highly recommended for graduate students and researchers working in the areas of wireless communications and signal processing engineering. It would also benefit radio communications engineers and practitioners.

"When Star Trek first premiered in 1966, viewers were shown a window into an amazing new sci-fi universe. That vision has lasted and grown for decades after - and it was fulfilled by the creativity of this legendary show's talented art directors, prop masters, and set decorators. Star Trek would not have been the same without the Burke and Origami chairs, sculptures and other decorative arts, and props used on-set. These items would not even exist, were it not for various designers of the midcentury modern movement, such as Pierre Paulin, Joe Colombo, Paul McCobb, Warren Platner, and Milo Baughman. Authors Dan Chavkin and Brian McGuire invite you on a journey throught the original series. Together, they illustrate in depth how Midcentury Modern design gave rise to the feel and aesthetic of Star Trek. Detailed, expert examination of key episodes shows how these highly influential design movements are nigh-inseparable from Star Trek -- and how they helped to shape one of the greatest visions of the future."--Back cover.

Dawn of a New Era in Economy & Democracy "Solutions to economic problems that haven't 'fixed' themselves and appear to only be getting worse for a majority of the citizens of the world. Virtus is an important overview of the many challenges the world is facing and provides an economic solution to facing and meeting them." -- San Francisco Book Review Foroughizadeh's first book was defined by Kirkus Reviews: "An exploration . . . that's not for the fainthearted . . . offers a fresh perspective . . . to reflect new notions of economic value . . . how market-based economies might evolve into new forms that can sustain economic development and long-term prosperity for all. . . Forward-looking perspectives . . . thought-provoking ideas about the 21st-century global economy." -- Kirkus Reviews. This book goes beyond. The birth of a new era calls for a new economic paradigm--one that fits the pace of current developments in different sectors and industries and addresses the challenges posed by the introduction of such variables as game-changing, disruptive innovation, climate change, sustainability, virtualization of jobs, processes and business models, mass migration, and frailty of geopolitical scenarios. From the economies of entire countries and central banking --business sectors from banking to financial services and markets, from retail to manufacturing and services, government and nongovernment organizations are all on the verge of the most significant shift in their business models. A shift that will affect processes, revenue streams, remuneration, employment, taxation, debt, wealth, savings, defense, and delicate international balances. Very little will remain the same. An innovative, unique, and groundbreaking treatise on the imminent, and inevitable step-level evolution of the market economy and democracy towards comprehensive value generating models. Get an overview of the new economic climate, partake in creating the future, and be a step ahead of the race in the new era.
