It is, in some respects, the most difficult, requiring, and certainly, far the most laborious study. The facts for civil history we gather from personal experience, or from the examination of a comparatively few authors, whose statements the historian transfers, with such modification and commentary as he pleases, to his own pages. But in literary history, the books are the facts, and pretty substantial ones in many cases, which are not to be mastered at a glance, or on the report of another. It is a tedious process to read through a library in order to decide that the greater part is probably not worth reading at all. Literary history must come late in the intellectual development of a nation. It is the history of books, and there can be no history of books till books are written. It presupposes, moreover, a critical knowledge, - an acquaintance with the principles of taste, which can come only from a wide study and comparison of models. Even the acknowledged exemplars of this spe cies of'writing do not yield precedents of universal appli cation. Few men, of however rare colloquial powers, can bear so minute a record of their sayings and doings as renders Boswell's Life of Johnson one of the most attractive books in the English language. Where the hero, on the other hand, is a man of deeds rather than of words, the more Simple, literal, and authentic the chronicle of his actions, the better; arid, accordingly, scrupulous fidelity to this condition has made Southey's Life of Nelson a model of its kind. When the interest of the subject, however, is psychological, a reve lation of the conflicts, the aspirations, and the noble pleasures of one whose achievements bear no proportion to the daily beauty of his life and the inward resources of courage, love, and wisdom incarnated in the man himself, and chiefly ex hibited to the eye and heart of friendship, then we hail, with delight, the sympathetic intelligence and moral insight displayed by Carlyle in his Life of Sterling. There is, not withstanding this diversity of merit, one test applicable to all memoirs, -their more or less vivid reflection of character. Excerpt from The North American Review, 1846, Vol. 63 Man is made a moral being by his powers of observation, reflection, and reasoning, combined with his conscious free agency. He understands what he does, and he does what he prefers to do. Moreover, as actions lead to events by invariable laws, they are the legitimate subjects of rules. But moral rules, as they are designed to act upon the will, must, in order to be of any avail, be adjusted with reference to those motives or springs of action which immediately in fluence the will. The springs of action our author enumer ates as follows: The Appetites or Bodily Desires; the Afl'ections the Mental Desnres the Moral Sentiments and the Reflex Sentiments, under which head he classes the desire of love or esteem from others, and the desire of our own approval, together with all those Springs of Action which are designated by some compound of the world Self as Self-fldmt'ration, self-love. This last class seems to us redundant. We can trace no difference in kind between the desire of superiority, enumerated among the mental desires, and that of popularity or fame, which is put among the reflex sentiments.
