Excerpt from The Office of Adelantado The derivation of the name was the same as that of the higher official, for the adelantado menor was also to take the place of the king. According to the Parlz'a'as he was a very important official, placed by the king over all the merinos, not only over those of the districts and regions but also over those of the villages. 2 The chief distinction between the two offices lay in the fact that, whereas the judicial functions of the adelan tado menor were not supreme, his administrative functions were more extensive than those of the adelantado mayor. He was thus a judicial officer, endowed with extensive administrative powers, and placed in charge of a certain designated district.3 As late as 1681, in the codification known as La Nueva Rooopi lacierz, provisions were included dealing with the adelantado menor. From that time onward the office fell into complete disuse. Because of the abuses committed by the adelantados menores they were supplanted by the alcaldes mayores. This book examines the medieval legacy that influences life in Spanish-speaking North America to the present day. Focusing on the period from 1517?the expedition of Hernandez de Cordoba?to the middle of the seventeenth century, Weckmann describes how explorers, administrators, judges, and clergy introduced to the New World a culture that was essentially medieval. That the transplanted culture differentiated itself from that of Spain is due to the resistance of the indigenous cultures of Mexico.
