Excerpt from From the Gold Mine to the Pulpit: The Story of the Rev. T. L. Jones, Backwoods Methodist Preacher in the Pacific Northwest, During the Closing Years of the Nineteenth Century The late Dr. J. N. Denison urged me to undertake it, and offered his assistance, but before I could pluck up courage to do so he was taken home. Two years ago my dear Brother Gabriel Sykes, a Methodist preacher of the Ore gon Conference, asked me to relate to him some of my experiences. Soon we de cided to put them into this form. Brother Sykes has been very patient and has worked faithfully, putting my crude thoughts into proper form. Excerpt from The Pacific Coast Pulpit, 1893 IF any apology be demanded for flooding the theological market with another volume of ser mons, let it be found in the introduction to this volume, kindly furnished by my friend, the Rev. Dr. Mackenzie, or in the volume itself, which, I beg leave to think, is no unworthy addition to the sermon literature of the day. I would acknowledge the uniform kindness Of my brethren on the Coast, and so express to them my thanks that I have been permitted to complete this selection of their pulpit work with the single aim and hope that as their ministry from the pulpit has been used Of God to the conversion of souls and the confirming Of their faith, so now in a still larger sense, the Divine Spirit may carry these arrows of gospel truth home to the mind and heart of the larger congregation. It has been my privilege to listen to the delivery of some Of these sermons, and I cordially assent that in some cases the charm Of personal magnet ism has much to do with the warmth of the recep tion of the Divine truth. I am not without hope that the reading may be as profitable to others as the hearing was to me. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The People's Church Pulpit The Congregationalist, printed at Boston, gave the following account of the religious services at the opening, and not the dedication, of the People's Church, in its issue of February 21. "The 'People's Church' in this city was, for some reason, the hardest to dedicate of which we ever heard. It seems to have taken one day more than a week." Remembering how frequently persons "do err, not knowing the Scriptures," the pastor of the church took the precaution to provide against his being charged like the Athenians, with spending his time in announcing "some new thing," by printing within a scroll on the cover of the programmes, which he confidently believed would arrest the attention of every person receiving one of them, the following, found in the thirty-ninth verse of the twenty-third chapter of the third book of Moses, called Leviticus: - "Ye shall keep a feast unto the Lord seven days. On the first day shall be a Sabbath, and on the eighth day shall be a Sabbath." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
