This open access handbook examines the phenomenon of South-South migration and its relationship to inequality in the Global South, where at least a third of all international migration takes place. Drawing on contributions from nearly 70 leading migration scholars, mainly from the Global South, the handbook challenges dominant conceptualisations of migration, offering new perspectives and insights that can inform theoretical and policy understandings and unlock migration’s development potential. This handbook focuses on the dynamic nature of global migration and its implications for international business. Migration shapes the societal and organizational contexts of international business; yet studies on migration have only recently become more prominent. For example, the existence of multinational enterprises (MNEs) depends to no small extent on the mobility of people; MNEs source, develop, deploy, and utilize global talent. This talent pool includes, but is not limited to, skilled expatriates or corporate migrants, as well as culturally and ethnically diverse workforces comprised of first- and second-generation migrants, highly skilled refugees that help organizations enhance their legitimacy in host countries, and returnee immigrants encouraged by changing home country conditions. Additionally, global events such as the COVID-19 pandemic and Brexit have introduced new and far-reaching challenges for international firms in managing their international workforces and international mobility. Meanwhile, at the individual level, these issues are compounded for migrants having to cope with multiple work and non-work demands. Chapters in this handbook offer both firm and migrant perspectives, covering topics such as diaspora networks in international alliances, migrant careers, and migrant re-entry issues, among others. Arranged in five sections, this handbook covers the whole spectrum of issues, thus furthering our understanding of this increasingly important topic.

This handbook provides an overview of developments in the youth mobility and migration research field, with specific emphasis on movement for education, work and training purposes, encompassing exchanges sponsored by institutions, governments and international agencies, and free movement. The collection features over 30 theoretically and empirically-based discussions of the meaning and key aspects of various forms of mobility as practiced in contemporary societies, and concludes with an exploration of the costs and benefits of moving abroad to individuals and societies at a time when the viability of free circulation is being called into question. The geographical scope of the book covers Europe, Asia, Australia and the Americas, and takes into account socio-economic and regional inequalities, as well as recent developments such as the refugee crisis, Brexit and the Covid-19 pandemic. This book offers a critical examination of the way in which the nature and governance of international labour migration is changing within a globalizing environment. It examines how labour mobility and the governance of labour migration are changing by exploring the links between political economy and differentiated forms of labour migration. Additionally, it considers the effects of new social models of inclusion and exclusion on labour migration. There are almost 200 million migrants in the world today. The majority of people leaving their home countries are migrating for work and almost half of them are women. The contribution of these workers is evident, yet many work in unacceptable conditions, denied access to social protection and their labour rights.
