Excerpt from The Pilgrims and Their History I have attempted a new study Pilgrims and their history from the sources. While I was unable to find much new evidence of prime importance, I have perhaps been able to exclude from further consideration the possibility of ascertaining information about the Pilgrims from the evidence concerning the Puritan Movement in England from 1580 to 1610, and from that regarding the history of the Established Church for the same period. But I have been able to place the older material about the Pilgrims in its relation to the more recent evidence concerning English church history, and have as well utilized for the first time the Plymouth First Church records and many Plymouth wills, which contain much of great value on economic and social history. No further accession of evidence is now probable and it is therefore an important fact, though due to no merit of mine, that the narrative presented in these pages possesses a certain aspect of finality. A new study of old evidence and the use of some new material has made possible certain differences in interpretation, in emphasis, and in judgment, the importance of which must not be unduly exaggerated. I have felt it possible to show that the Pilgrims were not subject to active persecution in England from Church or State; that Robinson's Congregation at Leyden was considerably smaller than most students have estimated; and that the really significant achievement was not the emigration itself, but the economic success of the years 1621 to 1627. Excerpt from The Story of the Pilgrims During the latter part of the year 1892 a number of companies, composed largely of young people, were formed in connection with Congregational churches in different parts of the United States for the study of the principles of Congregationalism and the history of the early Congregationalists. They took the name of Scrooby Clubs. The chapters of this book were written principally in order to aid such students and were printed week by week in The Congregationalist during the first six months of 1893 under the title Scrooby Club Sketches. They have been revised carefully and considerably expanded for republication as a book, and the twenty-fourth chapter is now added to the original series. They contain some facts believed to have been insufficiently, if at all, made known hitherto, although most of their material is familiar, particularly to special students of the subject. Excerpt from Stories of the Pilgrims A desire to know more of a story than these lessons gave, was another valuable result. For this desire on the part of the children to see a story in its natural setting, and to know what came before and what followed after, showed that they had reached the period which is a happy time for laying a strong foundation upon which to build later work; a. Time in which the awakened interest in people and events should be used to establish a firm basis for future reading and study in both biography and history. The Pilgrim Stories as originally written were read in a number of schools with the same satisfactory results. Now, carefully revised and graded in vocabulary, they are offered in book form with the hope that other pupils and teachers may use them with equal benefit and pleasure. Excerpt from Plymouth and the Pilgrims One may judge that if the four leagues Of land which there are from Panama to this river were cut through, one might pass from the south sea to the ocean on the other side, and thus shorten the route by more than fifteen hundred leagues, and from Panama to the Straits of Magellan would be an Island, and from Panama to the N ew - found-lands would be another island, so that the whole Of Amer ica would be in two islands. Excerpt from Young People's History of the Pilgrims One of many correspondents complains that "the trouble with Americans seems to be that they consider that the Pilgrims are a unique creation of their own and that they had 'cornered' the market of the world on them - like the American Indians. It is somewhat hard for them to realize that these Puritans were bonafide, every-day Englishmen." Too true! I have tried to avoid this Yankee tendency, to sketch rather the historical backgrounds, to remember the meanings of words as used in former days, and, in picturing the past, to unshackle our minds from the present.
