The greatest prize at the London 2012 Olympics isn't gold...it's the Holy Grail. There's a rumour there's treasure buried beneath the Olympic site. And that a secret army is going to find it. Only nobody believes it. But when a mysterious group of pirates move to the East End, people become suspicious. And when Cockneys start disappearing, the Pearly King demands answers. But that's the least of Oscar's worries - all he wants to do is kill some cockroaches. The problem is, he's using a chemical weapon to do it. The Pirates of Maryland Point is a fast-paced, who-dunnit, Cockney comedy caper packed with pirates and pie and mash. "For fans of Robert Rankin, Jasper Fforde or Douglas Adams."

Here is a dazzling array of swashbuckling pirates, picaroons, and sea rovers pitted against the often feckless representatives of an outpost government authority in the Chesapeake Bay region. It is an exciting and dramatic 200-year history that begins grimly with the starving time in the Virginia colony in 1609 and ends with the peaceful resolution of the Othello affair with the French in 1807. In between lies a full panoply of violent and bizarre buccaneering incidents that one is hard pressed to imagine.

“An epic history of piracy . . . Everyone has a funny holiday story, and I don’t think mine are any weirder than anybody else’s. I mean, everyone has had a holiday that involved hospitals, monsters, movie stars and the biggest ball of twine on the planet, right? Gumbi vs The World follows two ‘relaxing’ holidays I took in 2006. The first found me hospitalized on New Year's Eve having travelled across Poland with a thirteen year old self confessed 'gangsta' and Bee Gees fan. The second trip, six months later, found me travelling across America trying to hunt down Mike Schank, star of the Sundance award winning documentary American Movie, before being hospitalized in Hollywood. If that wasn't enough there was also a hunt for the Hodag (a mythical beast from Rhinelander, Wisconsin) and a meeting with the biggest ball of twine in the world, and its creator. And on top of all that there were the usual problems like lost luggage, language barriers and work believing I was dead.
