Excerpt from The Postage Stamps of the United States It is interesting to note, on many of the postmaster's stamps, a survival of the early custom of vouching for the prepayment of postage by means of the postmaster's signature. The New York Postmaster or his deputies placed their initials on the stamps of that city. Mr. Mitchell of New Haven wrote his name on each stamp. The Postmaster of Alexandria numbered his stamps. The stamps of Brattleboro bear a facsimile of the Post master's initials, and on those from Baltimore the signature is reproduced in full. Excerpt from A Comprehensive Catalogue of the Postage Stamps of the United States of America No reference is made as to postmarks, though in some of the earlier issues Carrier, Steamboat and Paid Cancellations are decidedly rare, as also those shewing year dates. Again certain stamps on entire envelopes are of greater value than if detached, a notable example being the 900. Of 1869 which is priced at 3 in the catalogues, but for which the writer (who has yet to see one) has heard of an offer of 20 to purchase a fine copy on entire! The colour of the obliterating ink may also have a marked effect on the value, green for instance being very scarce in the 1847 Issue. No Imperforate or part perforated varieties of stamps that are normally perforated are treated as varieties, except where such are beyond suspicion owing to their being found in pairs or blocks; and double or misplaced perforations are not listed, though they are frequently met with and probably exist in every issue. Of the misplaced transfers only the most prominent varieties are described. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
