This book presents the first full-length study of the stylistically experimental and influential novelist George Moore’s (1852-1933) repeated acts of rewriting. Moore extensively and repeatedly revised and re-issued many of his major works, sometimes years or even decades after they were initially published. This monograph provides new insights into how this process shaped and determined his work, and by extension into the creative significance of literary rewriting more generally. It also offers the first sustained application of linguistic pragmatics, the study of meaning in interaction, to the work of a single author, opening up questions about how analytical paradigms developed in pragmatics can explain how rewriting can affect the interactive relationship between a literary text and its readers. The book will be of interest to students and researchers in the areas of pragmatics, stylistics, literary history, English literature and Irish literature.

It provides a comprehensive overview of the main concepts and theories in pragmatics, examines the full range of pragmatic disorders that occur in children and adults and discusses how they are assessed and treated by clinicians.

This handbook provides a comprehensive and up-to-date survey of a wide range of developmental and clinical issues in pragmatics. Principally, the contributions to this volume deal with pragmatic competence in a native language, in a second or foreign language, and in a selection of language disorders. The topics which are covered explore questions of production and comprehension on the utterance and discourse level. Topics addressed concern the acquisition and learning, teaching and testing, assessment and treatment of various aspects of pragmatic ability, knowledge and use. These include, for example, the acquisition and development of speech acts, implicatures, irony, story-telling and interactional competence. Phenomena such as pragmatic awareness and pragmatic transfer are also addressed. The disorders considered include clinical conditions pertaining to children and to adults. Specifically, these are, among others, autism spectrum disorders, Down syndrome, and Alzheimer's disease.

The book aims to serve as a theoretical framework for the socio-cognitive approach (SCA) that is an alternative to the two main lines of pragmatics research: linguistic-philosophical pragmatics and sociocultural-interactional pragmatics. SCA broadens the scope of the field with an intent to incorporate not only L1 communication but also intercultural communication, and communication in a second language. The author integrates the pragmatic view of cooperation and the cognitive view of egocentrism and emphasizes that both cooperation and egocentrism are manifested in all phases of communication, albeit to varying extents. SCA places equal importance on the social and cognitive individual factors in pragmatics. The author claims that while (social) cooperation is an intention-directed practice that is governed by relevance, (individual) egocentrism is an attention-oriented trait dominated by salience. The book serves as a theoretical guide for researchers and students who would like to understand how we need to change first language-based theories to make sense of what happens not only in L1 but also in intercultural and multi-lingual interactions.

Contributors from areas including history, literary and cultural studies, and film studies look at the body as a cultural construct configured by politics, gender, racial categories, fears of pollution, and commercial forces that exploit and regulate it, from the 19th century to the present. This book is a study of the relations between the body and its technologies in modernism. Tim Armstrong traces the links between modernist literary texts and medical, psychological and social theory across a range of writers, including Yeats, Henry James, Eliot, Stein, and Pound. Armstrong shows how modernist texts enact experimental procedures which have their origins in nineteenth-century psychophysics, biology, and bodily reform techniques, but within a context in which the body is reconceived and subjected to new modes of production, representation and commodification. Drawing on a wide range of disciplines, Armstrong challenges the received oppositions between technology and literature, the instrumental and the aesthetic, by demonstrating the leaky boundaries and complex interconnections between these domains. This book offers a cultural history of modernism as it negotiated the enduring fact of the human body in a period of rapid technological change.

The core of this book is a set of five lectures delivered byHabermas at Princeton in 1971 under the title 'Reflections on theLinguistic Foundation of Sociology'. These lectures offer apreliminary view of what would become The Theory of CommunicativeAction, and they form an excellent introduction to Habermas's ideasabout communication and society. They lay out the generalparameters of Habermas's project in an accessible way, and situatehis work in relation to other theories of society, particularlythose of Edmund Husserl, Wilfrid Sellars, and LudwigWittgenstein. Two additional essays elaborating the themes of the lectures arealso included in this volume. 'Intentions, Conventions, andLinguistic Interactions' is an essay in the philosophy of actionthat focuses on the validity of social norms and examines theconceptual connections between rules, conventions, norm-governedaction, and intentionality. 'Reflections on CommunicativePathology' addresses the question of deviant processes ofsocialization and contains an analysis of the formal conditions ofsystematically distorted communication. This book was designed as a companion to On the Pragmatics ofCommunication (1998), which took pieces from Habermas's later workto create a systematic introduction to his theory of formalpragmatics.
