"Writing the fourth edition of The Public Speaking Playbook was energizing for us and especially meaningful as we accomplished it during the Covid-19 pandemic. With the realization that college campuses in the time of Covid are likely to be a mix of virtual and face-to-face classes, we wrote to this reality. We hope you find that the attention we give to recent events improves the Playbook, making it even more relevant, readable, and engaging than the text's prior editions. As with each of the previous editions, our goal in preparing the fourth edition was faithful to our original objective-to provide a resource that coaches students on how to prepare, practice, and present speeches for diverse and differently sized audiences who gather in an array of forums-from classrooms to community centers, from organizational to public venues, from face-to-face to virtual settings. Playbooks continue to serve multiple audiences-athletes, actors, musicians, dancers, politicians, community organizers, leaders, and speakers-who rely on them to master their craft, improve their skills, and accomplish their goals. All work under pressure, achieve individually or as part of a team or ensemble, and regularly plan and practice and evaluate in order to grow and improve performance outcomes. We continue to weave the playbook analogy throughout the pages of this text, repeatedly demonstrating how plans of action get results. Reviewing, practicing, and executing the right plays takes the fear out of public speaking and frees students to share their interests and knowledge, passions, and concerns with others"--
