When Hearts Forget One is three, and three are one. She is one, and one is five. When five are one, and five meet thee, We'll become one, and one is three. Forced into the Underworld after his untimely demise, Jeph faces his forgotten past-and the heartless bastard who made him forget it: Tartarus. Yippie for him-thanks, he hates it. Now the ruthless monster he always feared he would become, Jeph reaps the souls of the wicked, while rejecting the love he once felt for his friends. They're judgmental assholes anyway, so they can rot for all he cares. But when he's confronted by his destiny, he'll have to choose between remembering his heart or dooming his friends to fates worse than death. What does he care if they're in danger-and why would he risk his soul for people who never loved him anyway?

Did the universe begin to exist? If so, did it have a cause? Or could it have come into existence uncaused, from nothing? These questions are taken up by the medieval-though recently-revived-kalam cosmological argument, which has arguably been the most discussed philosophical argument for God's existence in recent decades. The kalam's line of reasoning maintains that the series of past events cannot be infinite but rather is finite. Since the universe could not have come into being uncaused, there must be a transcendent cause of the universe's beginning, a conclusion supportive of theism. This anthology on the philosophical arguments for the finitude of the past asks: Is an infinite series of past events metaphysically possible? Should actual infinites be restricted to theoretical mathematics, or can an actual infinite exist in the concrete world? These essays by kalam proponents and detractors engage in lively debate about the nature of infinity and its conundrums; about frequently-used kalam argument paradoxes of Tristram Shandy, the Grim Reaper, and Hilbert's Hotel; and about the infinity of the future.

"In a world where disease has been eliminated, the only way to die is to be randomly killed ('gleaned') by professional reapers ('scythes'). Two teens must compete with each other to become a scythe--a position neither of them wants. The one who becomes a scythe must kill the one who doesn't"--Provided by publisher.

After 1815 the usual form became a number of chapters on Britain, paying particular attention to the proceedings of Parliament, followed by chapters covering other countries in turn, no longer limited to Europe. The expansion of the History came at the expense of the sketches, reviews and other essays so that the nineteenth-century publication ceased to have the miscellaneous character of its eighteenth-century forebear, although poems continued to be included until 1862, and a small number of official papers and other important texts continue to be reproduced to this day. Includes a long historical essay on the "History of the Present War" (the Seven Years' War 1756-63). In his preface to the 1758 volume Burke noted the difficulties he had faced in writing the history section of the book. Taking the "broken and unconnected materials" and creating from them "one connected narrative" had been, he commented, "a work of more labour than may at first appear." The 1758 volume is considered a unique, contemporaneous account of the Seven Years' War, analyzing its origins and development with a perspective not readily available at the time in newspapers or magazines.
