The Red Derelict

'The Red Derelict' is an adventure novel by Bertram Mitford.The main character of the novel is Wagram Gerard Wagram, who we first met as he strolled leisurely on, drinking in the golden glory of the surroundings as though suffering it to saturate his whole being. As for the second time he half-unconsciously enunciated that single possessive it was with almost a misgiving, an uncomfortable stirring as of unreality. Would he awaken directly, as he had more than once awakened before, to find this vision of Paradise, as it were, dispelled in the cold and sunless gray of a mere existence, blank alike of aim or prospect—illusions dead, life all behind, in front—nothing? With these conditions he was well acquainted—only too well. The seamy side of life had indeed been his—failure, straitened means, disappointment in every form, and worse. Years of bitter and heart-wearing experiences had planted the iron in his soul—but this was all over now, never to return. To him, suddenly, startling in its unexpectedness, had come the change, and with it, peace.

The Derelict is a space saga centering on a stellar skirmish and a meeting with an unseen menace known to be heading for the Milky Way Galaxy. It is not until they board this dangerous, burned-out hulk that they discover they are trapped there by murderous diabolical forces.

"The Motor Rangers on Blue Water; or, The Secret of the Derelict" by John Henry Goldfrap is an adventure book that rivals the works of Fleming and Verne. From the first page, you'll be sent on a thrilling journey on land and water. Though the book was written decades ago, you wouldn't guess that from the way it's written. It's contemporary and humorous enough o keep you engaged.

Gathered here under one cover are the previously scattered tales of my hitch-hiking life. As the sub-title implies, however, they are more than mere travel tales; for the common, unremarkable act of hitch-hiking cloaks a quite remarkable instrument of personal growth and guidance. This is so because it is uniquely capable of removing the hitch-hiker from the realm of the planned and predictable. Life happens, then, on a course of events over which we have only the barest remnant of control (accepting or rejecting an offered ride). In this rarefied state of being, amazing things become visible for the perceptive observer. Without the protective shield of control, one begins to see elements of real life most often otherwise hidden by the myopia of pursuing a goal under one’s own drive and handling – the normal circumstance of daily life. The ‘real life’ I invariably discover, when hitch-hiking, has been filled with instances of providence and synchronicity. So much so, that it has implanted in me a deeper, richer understanding of how life really works – if we let it. These tales are packed with such instances, making this book both a pleasure and an enlightenment to read.

Running from an attack by the Alliance and looking for cover, a derelict ship unexpectedly comes into view. JeVit of the Pure takes the opportunity to hide behind it, not expecting to find an open bay door inviting them in. Too late she realizes she should have rejected that invitation. Centurion Zeke Rossi and his team are in pursuit of an enemy ship when it just…disappears. Spotting an alien vessel they don’t recognize, the Terrans temporarily give up the chase to investigate, and Zeke is tapped to board the ship first to look around. Immediately, his gut tells him something is wrong. It’s not until he enters the spacecraft that his feeling is validated, but he has no idea the worst is yet to come. The ship seems to be truly deserted, but the two couldn’t be more wrong. When their paths cross, JeVit realizes that although Zeke is injured, their best chance of surviving is to call a truce and join forces. However, trust between enemies proves difficult. When escape becomes possible, JeVit chooses the path most likely to save Zeke’s life, and hopefully not end hers on sight. But when Zeke awakens, his memories are nothing but flashes, other than the gray-eyed, blue-headed beauty he keeps envisioning. What happened to him? What happened to her? And how does she fit into the puzzle of his piecemeal memory? Raised to be sworn enemies, the two can’t resist the pull to be together, despite what it means for their future. They’re willing to risk it all, but can they convince the Terrans and the Hafu to unite against a common enemy?

Despite the opinions of others, who view him merely as a derelict, Johnny "Pooh" Thompson follows his own wayward path toward self-destruction. Original.
