Excerpt from The Romance of the Earth In calling this little reading book a romance it must not be supposed that facts are ignored. I have used all the facts I found available. Most of the statements are the accepted truths, many of them the commonplaces, of science. Where I could not obtain facts, I have permitted myself to speculate, to make deductions from the accepted laws of nature. When I have thus soared on the wings of the imagi nation I hope the flight has not been unscientific, nor the views presented unsound. When I have used those Wings I have kept well Within sight of the reader; he can see every movement that has led me to these conclusions. Sometimes where no path existed I have not dared to soar; I have merely roughed out tracks that I hope will be straightened and metalled and become paths of progress. Where two opposing schools have suggested opposite ways I have not hesitated to use the clue given me by codified science, and have followed fearlessly where the accepted laws of matter and energy have led me. With powerful magic that manipulates the natural world, dangerously cunning royalty, and heart-stopping romance, this new sweeping fantasy series is perfect for fans of Sabaa Tahir. "Another fantasy romance in the vein of books by Sabaa Tahir, Renee Ahdieh. . . . Shalia matures from a frightened girl in a foreign land to a woman unwilling to allow her destiny or desires to be controlled by the men around her." - School Library Journal "I will be thinking about Shalia's strength and fearlessness (and swooning over the slow-burn romance) as I anxiously await book two!" - Erin Bowman, author of Vengeance Road Shalia is a proud daughter of the desert, but after years of devastating war with the adjoining kingdom, her people are desperate for an end to the violence that has claimed so many of their loved ones. Willing to trade her freedom to ensure the safety of her family, Shalia becomes Queen of the Bone Lands, a country where magic is outlawed and the Elementae--those that can control earth, air, fire and water--are traitors, subject to torture . . . or worse. Before she is even crowned, Shalia discovers that she can bend the earth to her will. Trapped between her husband's irrational hatred of the Elementae and a dangerous rebellion led by her own brother, Shalia must harness her power and make an impossible choice: save her family, save the Elementae, or save herself.

Eighteen-year-old Rylla Wayscot has always wanted to fly, but being human has its limitations. As a cartographer's daughter in the Earthen-Crest kingdoms' boot of Aylati, Rylla wants more than anything to know the whereabouts of her brothers, even if it means finding them herself. But there's one problem: she's afraid to venture too far from home. After a short walk to the Grove and stumbling into a talking cat, she realizes she may have no other choice. There she is told she's an Earth-Treader-one who can bend the will of nature and speak to animals, and she's reminded of the Earth-Lore-the five missing stones which once held their kingdoms together. But with a growing Darkness lurking on the horizon, the missing stones are being sought by many. Rylla is tasked with finding them herself, especially before the cruel Lord Brennigan does. Despite all her protestations, Rylla can't escape her fate. She must embark on this impossible journey and leave all her comforts behind. But she's not alone. Even with fear and doubt as her armor, Rylla meets strangers who challenge her resolve, and she learns that even in the shadows love and light can thrive. Perhaps it's even enough to give her wings.
