Education which does not borrow something from the Word of Inspiration, will, in the end, turn out unsatisfactory; for though a purely secular training may become a mental discipline, and in a slight degree conduce to moral progress, it will be discipline and progress of a very heathen sample. A mind stored with knowledge, while wanting a sanctified conscience, resembles a richly-laden but rudderless barque, unable successfully to make way against the current. She is water-tight and comfortable only so long as no breakers discover her weakness. Parliament has lately decided on promoting the weal of the poor by authorising School Boards to provide for the education of those who, without some rescuing agency would continue in ignorance.
