Leadership and the E5 Movement CRACK THE CODE OF GAME-CHANGING LEADERSHIP From a young backpacker sleeping on a park bench in Japan to becoming a senior leader of one of the biggest corporate giants in the world, Paul Dupuis has built a career through game-changing leadership—crafted through his own experiences as an athlete, volunteer and CEO. The E5 formula discussed in The Rule of 5 is both familiar and fresh. It’s a leadership model built in the spirit of ‘standing on the shoulders of giants’, learning from leaders like Konosuke Matsushita, the founder of Panasonic, who put ‘empathy’ and ‘enable’ at the core of his leadership approach; Jack Welch with his 3Es, who then inspired Bob McDonald at P&G to craft his own version of the 5Es; and Jim Collins, who shared his version of Level 5 Leadership in the book Good to Great with execution at the core. The E5 Movement is a call to action to all leaders worldwide to lead with impact. The five Es are: envision, express, excite, enable and execute. These five rules of leadership are both timeless and borderless. The real-life anecdotes, combined with the conversational tone of the book, make this an accessible and impactful read. Thought-provoking and practical, this book will inspire leaders to think about their own leadership, adopting the five Es on their mission to lead their teams to excellence—a true game changer. Pick your five and join the movement! PAUL DUPUIS is the CEO and chairman of Randstad Japan. Paul was formerly the CEO of Randstad India and chairman of HOPE International (JP). He is Canadian and bilingual; he speaks both English and Japanese, and has lived and worked across Asia for more than 25 years. He is an avid athlete, with a particular passion for ice hockey and volunteering. “A wonderful guide for leading in tomorrow’s rapidly changing world!” MARSHALL GOLDSMITH, #1 New York Times bestselling author “The Rule of 5 is about a compelling new mindset and a set of innovative practices game-changing leaders must quickly adopt.” DR. S. RAGHUNATH, Chairperson, Centre for Corporate Governance and Citizenship, Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore (IIMB)

In a world gone dark, life goes on for Adam and his fortified neighborhood of Eden Mills—even if the extreme steps taken by his battle-hardened mentor Herb, his police chief mom, and the other leaders in the name of security and survival are increasingly wrenching and questionable. But with renewed determination, Adam will follow Herb’s lead: he’ll do what it takes, he’ll make sense of having had to defeat the enemy in such awful ways. All that matters is that their suburban home is safe again—in a blackened world that still feels like a place worth living in. So when the next threat, more deadly and dangerous for being so unexpected, comes from within the walls, Adam isn’t ready for it. And soon the very person in whom this sixteen-year-old has placed all his hopes will pay the price, because of Adam’s mistakes, and mistaken trust.

Consider the age-old question of how much you should save to enjoy a comfortable retirement: Are your knees knocking? Are you nervously biting your nails? In The Rule of 30 personal finance expert Frederick Vettese provides a surprising — and hopeful — answer. Through conversations between a young couple and their neighbor, a retired actuary, the couple and the reader discover: • How they would have fared had they been saving over various periods in the past, and how the future investment climate will differ • The problem with saving a constant percentage of pay • The Rule of 30 and why it is a more rational way to save • Whether investing in real estate is a viable alternative to investing in stocks The Rule of 30 changes the mindset from saving the same flat percentage of pay to saving when it is most convenient to your situation. In most cases, it means less saving early on while mortgage payments are high and children are costly, and more saving later. Saving for retirement is a high priority, but it is not the only priority in life. It is time to dispense with old myths like “just save 10% of your take-home pay.” The truth is we should save differently throughout our pre-retirement years — and The Rule of 30 is a road map for doing so.

While many recent observers have accused American judges—especially Supreme Court justices—of being too driven by politics and ideology, others have argued that judges are justified in using their positions to advance personal views. Advocating a different approach—one that eschews ideology but still values personal perspective—H. Jefferson Powell makes a compelling case for the centrality of individual conscience in constitutional decision making. Powell argues that almost every controversial decision has more than one constitutionally defensible resolution. In such cases, he goes on to contend, the language and ideals of the Constitution require judges to decide in good faith, exercising what Powell calls the constitutional virtues: candor, intellectual honesty, humility about the limits of constitutional adjudication, and willingness to admit that they do not have all the answers. Constitutional Conscience concludes that the need for these qualities in judges—as well as lawyers and citizens—is implicit in our constitutional practices, and that without them judicial review would forfeit both its own integrity and the credibility of the courts themselves.
