The definitive bibliography of Canada’s Governor General’s Literary Awards Alice Munro, Michael Ondaatje, Margaret Atwood, Antonine Maillet, Carol Shields, Marie-Claire Blais, Gilles Vigneault... For over three quarters of a century, the Governor General’s Literary Awards have been instrumental in recognizing many of Canada’s best authors, illustrators and translators. The result is impressive: between 1936 and 2017, 705 titles have been recognized with this prestigious award. With careful attention to detail, Andrew Irvine presents the history and evolution of the Awards and extols their importance for the careers of authors, illustrators and translators, as well as for the development of Canada’s national literature. The heart of the book contains the first comprehensive bibliography of the awards, including the first list of winning books organized according to their historically correct award categories; information about five books wrongly omitted from previous lists of winning titles; detailed information about award ceremonies, film adaptations and jury members; and other key information. This is a seminal work that belongs on the shelf of every scholar and every lover of Canadian literature. This book is published in English. Jessica knew that the family meeting Dad had called for that evening probably wouldn't be good news. Family meetings usually meant Mum talking a lot and then the whole family getting involved in some project that left everything in a mess until they gradually forgot about it. But at school that day, Jessica forgot about the meeting. A teacher announced a new class project: They were to choose partners, pick an animal to study and present a paper. Jessica's partner would be her best friend, Margaret. And so it was Margaret whom Jessica called with the tremendous news from the family meeting: Mum was pregnant. Margaret was nearly as excited as Jessica, and very quickly the two of them decided that instead of studying the duck-billed platypus for the school project, they would study babies. But all their reading, discussions and research did not prepare Jessica or her family for the drastic changes baby Lucie would bring to their lives.

Jack's story covers the first twenty-seven years of his life (1935-62). He was born in Maine. His family moved to Florida before he was one year old. Within three years, both of Jack's parents died. Thus, he began life in an orphanage, placed there by his grandmother before he was four. Jack had a rebellious nature and ran away from the institution several times, always hitchhiking. At the age of twelve, his first road trip was for 350 miles to Florida, to visit his oldest sister. After three weeks, she returned him by bus. The next year Jack hitched rides to Philadelphia to visit his older brother, who also returned him to the orphanage. Jack's restlessness led him to quit school at sixteen and spend a year traveling the road with long-distance truck drivers. At eighteen, he joined the military and then committed a civilian crime while he was absent without leave (AWOL) from the service. Consequently, Jack spent time behind bars, first in a civilian jail then in a military stockade. The military kicked him out with an undesirable discharge. Jack's memoir is a story of recovery. He credits three men with helping him overcome his poor start in life: his brother, a brother-in-law, and a US congressman. Their actions spoke more loudly than their encouraging words. Jack's story also provides a glimpse of a more innocent time in America.
