Ava, Rebecca and the Major have returned from their adventure to Planet X, but Ava has miscalculated how the Earth should have been when they return. Climate change has been ravaging the planet and worse. The human population has declined to such an extent that they no longer can be trusted. Austerity has taken hold and the world's resources have become scarce. Anarchy now rules the land, and a lawless society reins over every town and city. John and Lacey have been spared much of the changes, but when a planned weekend for their sons, Joshua, and Thomas to visit has not materialised, they too must decide. Should they stay as their smallholding shrivels into a dust bowl as the climate has become so erratic with times of severe drought and temperatures reaching such highs and lows, no plant can survive.
