Not that we have been alone in our neglect; Spain itself, the mother nation of Spanish America's grow ing republics, has until very recently ignored the letters of its numerous offspring. Owing to the meager acquaintance that our reading pub lic has with spanish-american literature, a book of purely critical essays is at this time inadvisable; I have, there fore, in the following chapters, greely mingled excerpts, exposition and a modicum of criticism, in the hope of thus providing an incentive for further delving into the authors and the books commented upon.
