Following FLINS '94, the 1st International workshop on fuzzy logic and intelligent technologies in nuclear science, FLINS '96 aimed to introduce the principles of intelligent systems and soft computing, such as fuzzy logic, neural networks, genetic algorithms (and any combination of these three), knowledge-based expert systems and complex problem-solving techniques, in nuclear science and industry and in related fields. This volume presents carefully selected papers drawn from more than 20 countries. It covers theoretical aspects of intelligent systems and soft computing, together with their applications in nuclear science and industry. Formal Methods for Open Object-Based Distributed Systems presents the leading edge in several related fields, specifically object-orientated programming, open distributed systems and formal methods for object-oriented systems. With increased support within industry regarding these areas, this book captures the most up-to-date information on the subject. Many topics are discussed, including the following important areas: object-oriented design and programming; formal specification of distributed systems; open distributed platforms; types, interfaces and behaviour; formalisation of object-oriented methods. This volume comprises the proceedings of the International Workshop on Formal Methods for Open Object-based Distributed Systems (FMOODS), sponsored by the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) which was held in Florence, Italy, in February 1999. Formal Methods for Open Object-Based Distributed Systems is suitable as a secondary text for graduate-level courses in computer science and telecommunications, and as a reference for researchers and practitioners in industry, commerce and government.

Information Systems Research: Relevant Theory and Informed Practice comprises the edited proceedings of the WG8.2 conference, "Relevant Theory and Informed Practice: Looking Forward from a 20-Year Perspective on IS Research," which was sponsored by IFIP and held in Manchester, England, in July 2004. The conference attracted a record number of high-quality manuscripts, all of which were subjected to a rigorous reviewing process in which four to eight track chairs, associate editors, and reviewers thoughtfully scrutinized papers by the highly regarded as well as the newcomers. No person or idea was considered sacrosanct and no paper made it through this process unscathed. All authors were asked to revise the accepted papers, some more than once; thus, good papers got better. With only 29 percent of the papers accepted, these proceedings are significantly more selective than is typical of many conference proceedings. This volume is organized in 7 sections, with 33 full research papers providing panoramic views and reflections on the Information Systems (IS) discipline followed by papers featuring critical interpretive studies, action research, theoretical perspectives on IS research, and the methods and politics of IS development. Also included are 6 panel descriptions and a new category of "bright idea" position papers, 11 in all, wherein main points are summarized in a pithy and provocative fashion.
