Native North Americans and their history from colonial times to the present day have been a topic of discussion and study by nearly every ethnic group and nationality around the world. It could be said that the Native American has been cast and recast, interpreted, reinterpreted, and misinterpreted more than any other ethnic group throughout modern history. The Anglo centric perspective remains the most widely adopted way of looking at Native American civilizations. It is still widely accepted as positive that white colonists “discovered “the North American continent and due to their racial superiority supplanted the less developed, “savage” native inhabitants. Even the seemingly more Native American friendly interpretations of history still cast them as a conquered victimized and oppressed minority, over simplifying them as uniformly dignified, peace-loving people who lived harmoniously with nature. Historians, and those who interpret the past are inevitably a product of the social, cultural, and political issues of their time, as well as their education and echelon of society. Fortunately, as societies evolve, responsible historians have been prompted to reconsider these long-held assumptions within the context of a more evolved and diverse perspective. Even more importantly, however, in the last several decades, historians of Native American descent are finally enriching the field of North American history by adding the vital dimension of their long-absent native voices. Native Americans themselves are at long last being invited to participate in interpreting and researching their own ancestral colonization.

America's story is made up of many elements, but through it have coursed two main streams that have nourished and carried a people forward to a destiny that was beyond all imagining when the story began. One of these is an idea that goes back to the rim of recorded time. It was first a dim, gnawing hope that the future lay in a magic land off to the west. Once that land was found, it drew people to it like a magnet. It is easy to say that it was gold or precious stones or land that led them on, for it was all of these. Yet, it was more - and here was the second great stream of American history. There was something that literally drove people westward, goading them across the endless mountains, through steep passes, across searing plains and desert into the face of terrors known and those unguessed. It was vision. It was courage. It was, at times, the sheer joy of overcoming fantastic obstacles. And it was also the conviction that what they were doing was different from anything that had happened before, that nothing would ever be quite the same again, and that the world would be a better place for what they had accomplished. "Eastward I go only by force," Henry David Thoreau said, "but westward I go free." The sleep of 100 centuries was stirred up in that surge toward the sunset, for out of it emerged not only a new people and a new nation but a force that changed the globe.

HOW THE CITY OF HAMILTON AND THE ONTARIO ARCHAEOLOGICAL LICENCE BUREAU CONSPIRED TO STEAL TWO U.S. NAVY WARSHIPS FROM THE PEOPLE OF THE WORLD. The War of 1812 was ravaging the countryside when two U.S. Navy warships - the Hamilton and the Scourge - foundered in Lake Ontario in a sudden nighttime squall. Seventy American sailors drowned in darkness. Both shipwrecks were discovered off Port Dalhousie, Ontario in 1975. Factions within the U.S. Navy immediately asserted American ownership. In 1979, title to the wrecks was transferred from the Navy to the Royal Ontario Museum, which, like a clearing house, quickly transferred title to the City of Hamilton. As a condition of custody, the City promised to conduct scientific studies and archaeological assessments of the sites, after which it would consider the possibility of raising the wrecks as tourist attractions. Now, a quarter of a century later, the City has done absolutely nothing to honor its pledge. Worse, it has taken an active stance in preventing others from conducting studies. After twenty-five years of apathetic treatment, the wrecks are still rotting away on the lake bed, suffering from the ravages of zebra mussels and inevitable natural decay. Stolen Heritage is the saga of one American s attempt to visit these relics of his country s heritage - a heritage that was usurped by bureaucratic fiat. Those who control these historic sites would rather see them decompose than permit anyone - including Americans - to see or photograph them. This book is a story of conspiracy, double dealing, lies, and deceit: an ugly trip through the political machinations of the City of Hamilton s corrupt bureaucrats, and the manipulations of individuals within the Ontario Archaeological Licence Bureau.
