The Touch of Abner is the story of Abner Andrews, a cranky old farmer who makes a false promise of giving a thousand dollars to a new orphanage. The question throughout the novel is how he will fulfill his commitment as he now lacks such a huge amount of money. The task looks even more unattainable with his crooked lawyer. He takes on his nemesis and acquaintances with impulsive enthusiasm, resulting in chaos. Abner suffers a few falls along the way because of his irritable temper. One unique character trait of the old farmer is that he amuses himself by telling lies and purposely mishearing people for comic effect. This light-hearted story full of humor delights the readers with its lifelike characters and exciting plot.

Excerpt from The Touch of Abner A ripple of amusement passed through the assembly, and there were numerous whispered conversations. In. Stead of being very indignant at what Abner had said, all, except Isaac Dimock, were inclined to treat the countryman's cutting words as a joke. They wondered, nevertheless, at the otter he had made of one thousand dollars. The reporter kept steadily on with his writing. Lie was alive to the situation, and chuckled to himself as he thought of the stirring article he would have for The Live Wire in the morning. Prominent scholars in the fields of Archaeology, New Testament Studies, and the Dead Sea Scrolls have come together in "The World of Jesus and the Early Church" to focus on early Jewish and Christian communities of faith and their impact on the collections of texts that were their scriptures (and would become, in due time, part of their various canons). Professors, students, and pastors who are interested in how these communities lived--how they developed, what they believed, and how they regarded and preserved the written documents that were their scripture--will be interested in this comprehensive volume drawn from presentations made to key conferences on the subject. This book's emphasis on a variety of communities of faith (not just Christian) and their early (and critical) influence on the development of religious canonical materials sets it apart from others on New Testament-period culture.
