The Triads

Gregory Palamas (1296-1359)-monk, archbishop and theologian-was a major figure in 14th-century Orthodox Byzantium. This, his greatest work, presents a defense in support of the monastic groups known as the "hesychasts," the originators of the Jesus Prayer.

First published in 2006. Claiming origins in the mysteries of the Shaolin monastery and its martial traditions, the Triads are Chinese secret societies that overthrew the Qing Dynasty, evolved into organised crime syndicates, spread through the Chinese diaspora and are more powerful now than ever before. There is no doubt that the triads have become recognized as a sophisticated and international criminal force and, following the handover of Hong Kong to China, there have been increasing fears that their influence will spread to the West through emigration. This book investigates the reality behind the myth with a study of the Hong Kong triads, generally regarded as the headquarters of triad societies throughout the world. Book four sees Lord Croft not only having to contend with an attempt by the Chinese Triads and the Nigerian drug Lords to take over the drugs trade in England but also an attempt by an unscrupulous Italian count to break up his marriage to Janet, his longsuffering wife. Lord Crofts ways of a sexual predator continue unabated, meeting up with previous mistresses as well as new ones. Obtaining a commercial pilots license and extending his charter activities to include air and sea add new challenges in this fight for survival in the underworld of drug trafficking and intrigue.

The extensive ritual and mythological lore of the Chinese Triads form the scope of the new title in Brill's monograph series Sinica Leidensia. The author evaluates the extant sources and introduces several little used Triad manuals, as well as a wealth of contextual information.
