Excerpt from The Truth-Seeker and Present Age, 1849: A Catholic Review of Literature, Philosophy, and Religion As an introduction to a better classified system of history, in connection with Societary Science and Art, we present a brief synopsis of the principal phases of history, thro an outline of the chief states of society which have been deve loped more or less in the world. Excerpt from Truth and Counter Truth The rule now laid down with regard to Omnipotence and free will, holds in the case of nearly all the mysteries of revealed religion; for it is characteristic of them all that it is to a biune or complex, and not to a simple ar ticle of belief our assent is asked. The Unity of the God head, for example, is, as a truth, absolute and unqualified at the same time, we must remember that the manner in which the One Godhead exists is not such as to forbid a plurality of persons in it and vice versa, the notion of plurality is not such as to militate against the Unity of the Divine substance. We are neither to confound the persons, nor to divide the substance. We are taught to believe, in like manner, that in the person of our Lord Jesus Christ, the perfect Godhead exists; yet the manner of its existence is not such as to swallow up, notwith standing its glory, the proper humanity; there is a per feet Humanity, yet it is not such as to exclude, notwith standing it weakness, the perfect Godhead. Excerpt from Idealism and Theology: A Study of Presuppositions In these lectures an attempt is made to show that there isat work, in the seeming chaos of our philosophical thinking, an organising principle which promises to give new life to theology. At present, while religion clings to the supernatural, philosophy seems to deny and theology hesitates. Religion takes refuge in mysticism. Thereupon theology finds courage to approve, and philosophy becomes loftily critical. But no one will venture to say what exactly is the supernatural, and in what sense mysticism is admissible. A principle which the writer believes can be discovered by means of a criticism of philosophical idealism seems to provide an answer to these questions. Excerpt from Essay Catholicism, Liberalism, and Socialism: Considered in Their Fundamental Principles The decline of faith that produces the decline of truth does not necessarily cripple, but certainly misleads the human mind. God, who is both compassionate and just, denies truth to guilty souls, but does not deprive them of life. He condemns them to error, but not to death. As an evidence of this, every one has witnessed those periods of prodigious incredulity and Of highest culture that have shone in history with a phosphores cent light, leaving more of a burning than a luminous track behind them. If we carefully contemplate these ages, we Shall see that their Splendor is only the inflamed glare of the Iightning's flash. It is evident that their brightness is the sudden explosion of their obscure but combustible materials, rather than the calm light pro ceeding from purest regions, and serenely Spread over heaven's vault by the divine pencil of the sovereign painter.
