In the last decade, solar energy has experienced a rapid growth, which brings both environmental and economic benefits. In many countries, there is still no electricity grid extension in rural areas, and in the absence of a reliable electricity supply, farmers have to resort to diesel-based pumping irrigation systems. The solar photovoltaic (PV) system generates clean energy and eliminates the risk of environmental pollution in the form of oil spills, contaminated soil and carbon dioxide emissions. Operation and maintenance of the solar PV pumping system is a technical job that requires specialized knowledge and information to keep the system in working condition and sustainable and in working conditions. For this purpose, this sourcebook is designed to provide information on the design, operation, inspection, troubleshooting, and maintenance of solar PV pumping systems.

The report gives a state-of-the-art overview of policies, regulations and incentives for the sustainable use of solar-powered irrigation technologies (SPIS) around the world. SPIS offer a viable, low-tech energy solution for irrigated agriculture, providing a reliable source of energy in remote areas, contributing to rural electrification, reducing energy costs for irrigation and enabling low emission agriculture. Nevertheless, SPIS have a significant initial investment cost and require innovative financing models to overcome this barrier to adoption, especially for small-scale farmers. Technical knowledge and service infrastructure is needed to ensure that the systems run effectively. Moreover, SPIS – if not adequately managed - bear the risk of fostering unsustainable water use as lower energy costs may lead to over-abstraction of groundwater. This report looks at how different countries work to create an enabling environment for SPIS technologies, while managing the risks that come with it.

This case study describes the community of a small village called Ingotse in Kakamega county in western Kenya. Like most rural, food-insecure communities in sub-Saharan Africa, Ingotse village relied on rain-fed agriculture for production of staple crops. Farmers in this village raised some funds to sink a borehole. This was done in collaboration with a non-governmental organisation (NGO) known as Water for All which gave the community a solar-powered pump to distribute the water to the homesteads. Water from the borehole was used for irrigation, providing food crops all year round. Women and children no longer had to walk long distances to the river to fetch water; they had extra time in their day for other activities such as doing homework with children.

This is the 4th volume in an international energy reference book series aimed at bringing together, in a concise form, the basic principles and the most relevant data concerning both the efficient use of energy in agriculture and the food industry and alternative energy sources for agriculture. The theme of this volume is solar energy applications in agriculture. Since the 1960's the major industrial nations have faced an energy crisis; there is a realisation that fossil fuels exist in finite quantitities. In the 1970's and 80's, deposits of CO 2 in the atmosphere have increased, arguably resulting in an increase in global warming. Utilisation of solar energy could contribute to the improvement of man's standard of living while helping to decrease the potential for disasterous earth warming. The application of solar energy in agriculture is, in the main, environmentally benign. The purpose of this volume is to assist the solar energy system designer in understanding the principles of solar energy, to provide conceptual designs which are useful as application examples, and to provide specific equations and data for the design of specific applications.
