This volume includes twelve papers selected from the Ninth Annual Symposium on Arabic Linguistics, held at Georgetown University, Washington D.C., 1995. Three of the papers deal with codeswitching with Arabic, two with the acquisition of Arabic, and four with different aspects of Arabic grammatical structure. The volume also includes three papers presenting data on negation in some Arabic dialects (including those of Yemen, Morocco, Egypt). The topics are diverse and include Arabic and constraints on codeswitching, verb embeddings and collocations in codeswitching, ellipsis in child language acquisition, clitic left dislocation, parameter resetting in second language acquisition, accessing pharyngeal place, and the derivation of imperatives.

Egyptian Colloquial Arabic Verbs: Exercise Book will provide you with ample practice to achieve accuracy and fluency in verb conjugation. The exercises have been designed to guide you through the rules of conjugation step-by-step, starting with the very basics of ECA verbs. Absolute beginners will find the exercises challenging and engaging. More advanced learners will find the first parts of the book a good review or refresher and will, in the latter parts, be able to pinpoint weaknesses in their conjugation skills and knowledge. This exercise book is not meant to be a stand-alone course book. The focus is the morphology (formation) of Arabic verb conjugation. It is meant to provide supplementary exercises to learners so that they can improve accuracy and fluency in Egyptian Colloquial Arabic's seemingly complex system of verb conjugation. Learners will come to see that verb conjugation is actually quite straightforward and simple. Note: This exercise book is meant to be used in conjunction with Egyptian Colloquial Arabic Verbs: Conjugation Tables and Grammar

The Arabic verbal system is, for most grammarians, the keystone of the language. Notable for the regularity of its patterns, it presents the linguist with an unparalleled opportunity to explore the Saussurean notion of the indivisible sign: form and meaning. Whilst Arabic forms are well-documented, the elucidation of the corresponding meanings has proved more challenging. Beginning with an examination of the verbal morphology of Modern Standard Arabic, including an evaluation of the significance of the consonantal root, this volume then concentrates on establishing the function of the vowel-lengthening verbal patterns (III and VI). It explores issues of mutuality and reciprocity, valency and transitivity, ultimately focusing on atelic lexical aspect as the unified meaning of these patterns. This study is rich in data and relies extensively upon contemporary examples (with transliteration and translation) to illustrate its arguments, adopting an empirical structuralist approach which is aimed both at general linguists and at specialist Arabists.
