First published in 1925, 'The White Guard' is an engrossing book in which a Kyiv family is caught up in the Ukrainian War of Independence. Written by Mikhail Bulgakov, a Russian writer, medical doctor, and playwright active in the first half of the 20th century. Reds, Whites, German troops, and Ukrainian nationalists battle for control of the city of Kyiv as the war becomes more cataclysmic in Mikhail Bulgakov's debut novel. Drawing laboriously from the author's own background in Ukraine during the period of the Russian Civil War-he witnessed ten changes of government himself-the novel is told from alternating points of view and takes an unusual angle on the conflict between Russian Whites (with whom the Turbin family identify) and Ukrainian nationalists. It elegantly portrays the disarray of a civil war in which there is no good or evil, only loyalty to one's friends, family, and convictions.

Joseph Conrad (1857-1924) is widely considered one the great modern writers in English literature. This 21-volume set contains titles, originally published between 1976 and 1990 as well as a biography from 1957 written by one of his closest friends. The first 18 books are a set of concordances and indexes to Conrad’s printed works, which were part of a project directed by Todd K. Bender at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA and are among the first attempts to use the power of computers to enhance our reading environment and assist in lexicography, scholarly editing, and literary analysis. The set also contains a meticulously compiled bibliography of writings on Joseph Conrad, as well as an original and powerful analysis of his major work.

The 4 volumes in this set, originally published between 1980 and 1983, bring to light and focus on the conflict between Japan and Australia and Japan and the USA. Timothy Hall’s volumes, richly illustrated with black & white photographs, used highly contentious documents as their sources and give fascinating insights into a period of Australian history which is sometimes less than gloious. John J. Sbrega’s tour de force is not only one of the most extensive annotated bibliographies on the USA and Japan in World War 2 ever published, but it also provides invaluable information on lesser known but no less important aspects of the conflict.

Excerpt from The March of the White Guard Ask Mr. Hume to come here for a moment, Gosse, said Field, the Chief Factor, as he turned from the frosty Window of his office at Fort Providence, one of the Hudson Bay Company's posts. The servant, or more properly, orderly-sergeant Gosse, late of the Scots Guards, de parted on his errand, glancing curi ously at his master's face as he did so. The Chief Factor, as he turned round, unclasped his hands from bethe room, read carefully through a letter which he had held in the fingers of his right hand for the last ten minutes as he scanned the wastes of snow that stretched away beyond Great Slave Lake to the Arctic Circle and the Barren Grounds. He medi tated a moment, went back to the window, looked out again, shook his head negatively, and with a sigh walked over to the huge fireplace. He stood thoughtfully considering the floor until the door opened and Sub-factor Jaspar Hume entered. The Factor looked up and said. A tale of adventure and daring, loyalty and deceit, bravery and cowardice that captivates the imagination. It is a narrative that warms the heart and manifests the belief in goodness of man and the reward that follows it. The depth and goodness of characters is gratifying and visionary of morals.
