In architecture, as in food, local is an idea whose time has come. Of course, the idea of an architecture that responds to site; draws on local building traditions, materials, and crafts; and strives to create a sense of community is not recent. Yet, the way it has evolved in the past few years in the hands of some of the world's most accomplished architects is indeed defining a new movement. From the rammed-earth houses of Rick Joy and Pacific Northwest timber houses of Tom Kundig, to the community-built structures of Rural Studio and Francis Kéré, designers everywhere are championing an architecture that exists from, in, and for a specific place. The stunning projects, presented here in the first book to examine this global shift, were featured at the thirteenth and final Ghost conference held in 2011, organized by Nova Scotia architect, educator, and local practitioner Brian MacKay-Lyons. The result is the most complete collection of contemporary regionalist architecture available, with essays by early proponents of the movement, including Kenneth Frampton, Juhani Pallasmaa, and Pritzker Prize–winning architect Glenn Murcutt.

This is the first monograph published in the United States on Carlos Jimenez, whose work has been linked to the new wave of Spanish architects as well as to Latin American architects such as Luis Barragan. Jimenez's buildings are known for their purity of form, use of bold color, and sophisticated ordering of spaces. His simple geometries allow light to define and animate his otherwise tranquil interiors. This monograph presents eight of the architect's most stunning projects, including the headquarters for the Houston Fine Arts Press, the new Spencer Studio Art Building at Williams College in Massachusetts, the Central Administration Building of the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, and Jimenez's own house and studio complex. Richly illustrated throughout with photographs, plans, and drawings, the book includes an introduction by Rafael Moneo, an essay by historian Stephen Fox, and a postscript by Lars Lerup, as well as complete project documentation.

It is first a book about houses and particularly the theme ‘dwelling and the land’. It examines the poetic and prosaic issues inherent in claiming a piece of the landscape to live on. It could also be seen as a kind of road map, full of both warnings and encouragements for all those involved with, or just interested in, the making of houses.
