While participating in a Teacher Workshop organized by Georgina Valverde at the Art Institute of Chicago in 2013, Michael Hill began a one-year artistic and pedagogical odyssey making original images (always featuring some aspect of one or more athletic shoes) and posting them daily to a visual blog he created to help kick-start writing projects among the many student athletes he tutored at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He started the year self-identifying as "scholar/teacher," but at year's end Michael looked in the mirror and said, OK, still "scholar/ teacher," but also "artist." Here are the workshop organizer's foreword, the scholar's introduction, the teacher's formal lesson plan, 52 plates from the artist's blog, and a proxy example of student work.

Playful Learning Lab for Kids is a hands-on activity book that offers games and activities that revolve around the senses and concepts in reading, math, art, and science. Recent research has shown that children learn and develop new skills more quickly when they engage in playful, whole body activities. Movement allows them to refocus their attention, improves brain function, reduces stress, and improves circulation. Not only that, but the more senses that are used for learning, the more likely information is to be stored and retrieved. The activities in Playful Learning Lab for Kids explore concepts in reading, language, math, art, music, science, geography, and social studies, all while engaging children with movements, touch, sound, and sight. Most distinguishing of all, the activities and lessons here include suggestions for tailoring the experience to different levels, making it a book children can grow with. The skills range from visual perceptual skills and spatial awareness, to early geometry concepts, visual motor integration, and fine motor skills. Authors Claire Heffron and Lauren Drobnjak, pediatric occupational and physical therapists with years of experience in clinical and school-based settings, share their best tips and strategies for helping little learners reach their fullest potential through these engaging and fun activities. The popular Lab for Kids series features a growing list of books that share hands-on activities and projects on a wide host of topics, including art, astronomy, clay, geology, math, and even how to create your own circus—all authored by established experts in their fields. Each lab contains a complete materials list, clear step-by-step photographs of the process, as well as finished samples. The labs can be used as singular projects or as part of a yearlong curriculum of experiential learning. The activities are open-ended, designed to be explored over and over, often with different results. Geared toward being taught or guided by adults, they are enriching for a range of ages and skill levels. Gain firsthand knowledge on your favorite topic with Lab for Kids.

I had polio when I was twelve weeks old and moved to a wheelchair full time when I moved out on my own. Far from being confining, the blue chair has allowed me the freedom to do whatever I want to and when, including backpacking the world alone when time and finances allow. Whether it is falling out of my blue chair and breaking a leg in Zambia or being stranded in the dark on a small boat in the Java Sea off Indonesia, there is always a funny story to be told. For me Travels in a Blue Chair isn't about the chair. The chair is in many ways just a means to get me from point A to point B, exactly like shoes. The real story is about the many smiling people I've met all over the world who trip over themselves to help me out when I need it and then remain in contact with me to become life-long friends.

Lestrade panted, getting to his feet as the gang of Cheathams fell back. “Right now I can think of worse things than rescue by an amateur detective.” “My dear Lestrade, we’re simply ensuring the fight is fair.” Sherlock Holmes somehow dissuaded the truth of that by the way his lips were coiling up at the edges (without letting go of the pipe in his teeth). Perhaps it was because he was clearly in disguise as a seedy deckhand in Dutchman’s sailing clothes. From behind him the little professional could see Dr. Watson, tarred like a sailor and armed with a wicked-looking blackthorn. “Well, then!” Lestrade crowed with his fist up and parallel to the looming swarm over the tavern. “Who is next?” “Marcia Wilson has discovered Scotland Yard’s Tin Dispatch Box.” David Marcum, Pasticheur, Editor, and Creator of The MX Book of New Sherlock Holmes Stories
