Die Absicht vorliegender Studie ist zunachst eine kritische Priifung der philosophischen Anthropologie Max Schelers. Die Zeit von vierzig Jahren seit Schelers Tod, wahrend der die Ent wicklung der philosophischen Bemiihung urn Wesen und Wirk Abstand lichkeit des Menschen nicht stillstand, diirfte geniigend bieten fUr eine niichterne, person- und sachgerechte Bewaltigung dieser Aufgabe. Leitender Gesichtspunkt sind dabei die christ lichen bzw. theologischen Implikationen im Schelerschen Men schenbild. N ach der philosophischen Gotteslehre ist die philo sophische Anthropologie wohl am meisten aus der stet en Aus einandersetzung mit christlichem Gedankengut gewachsen. "Seitdem das Christentum in die Welt getreten ist, hat es im Abendland kein Nachdenken iiber Wesen und Wert des mensch lichen Daseins gegeben, das von dem EinfluB der christlichen Gedankenwelt v611ig unberiihrt geblieben ware."l Kaum ein anderer anthropologisch orientierter Denker un seres J ahrhun derts entspricht mehr dieser Diagnose als Max Scheler, mit dessen Namen die "philosophische Anthropologie" im engeren Sinn un- 16sbar verbunden bleibt. Die Tatsache der starken christlich-theologischen Beeinflus sung Schelers machte es notwendig, daB in unserer Arbeit immer wieder auch theologische Fragestellungen mitberiicksichtigt wer den muBten. Dies geschah, sooft die Sache es erforderte, jedoch unbeschadet der philosophischen Grundabsicht vorliegender Ab handlung. Wenn von "christlichen" bzw. In this comprehensive study, a renowned theologian examines the anthropological disciplines-human biology, psychology, cultural anthropology, sociology and history-for their religious implications. The result is a theological anthropology that does not derive from dogma or prejudice, but critically evaluates the findings of the disciplines. "Wahr" oder "unwahr" scheinen Prädikate, die nur einer Aussage zukommen können. Die Frage, auf die eine Aussage antwortet, das Thema, worauf sie sich einläßt, der Gegenstand, über den sie sich ausspricht, scheinen nicht "wahr" oder "verkehrt", sondern allenfalls "interessant" oder "uninteressant" sein zu können. Die Frage der Topik, wie sie hier gestellt und erörtert wird, ist dahingegen die, ob sich nicht auch für eine Frage, ein Thema, einen Gegenstand, verbunden mit der Frage des Interesses, eine Frage der Wahrheit (die Frage einer "topischen Wahrheit") stellt, da sonst die Frage nach der 'mogischen Wahrheit' einer Aussage buchstäblich gegenstandlos zu werden Gefahr läuft. In einem ersten Kapitel soll im Hinblick auf eine Reihe von Phänomenen (vom 'Betrug' bis hin zur 'Diskussion') gezeigt sein, daß sich eine solche Frage der Topik in der Tat stellt; im zweiten Kapitel, daß sie sich auch längst schon, sei es auch nicht unter diesem Namen, in der modernen Wissenschaftsphilosophie (von Kant bis Thomas Kuhn) erhoben hat. Das dritte Kapitel ist ein Versuch zur Grundlegung einer Antwort auf die Frage der Topik. Das vierte Kapitel soll zeigen, daß die gewöhnliche Ausflucht aus der Frage der Topik selber auf einer eigentümlichen Antwort auf die Frage der Topik beruht.

This study is a revised version ofa book, published in February 1990 under the same title, as my Ph.D. thesis at the University of Stockholm. Revision of an earlier work poses specific problems, some of which deserve mentioning. After the appearance of the first version of this book new literature on related subjects and a new version of the principal HusserI text involved in the discussion have appeared. The newer literature contains both accounts of Twardowski's thought and its relations to HusserI's philosophy, though without referring to my study from 1990, largely because the texts concerned were con ceived parallell to it, though published later, or independently of it. It would seem anachronistic, in this situation, to enter into new and ex tensive discussions with the authors of this literature. The choice made here has been to update the original study, adding references to texts published after my study, and to take account of points of views expressed. I have retained the major part of the basic information giv en in the 1990 version, although some of it might now be more famil iar to interested students than it was in 1990.
