Paul Harvey illustrates how black Christian traditions provided theological, institutional, and personal strategies for cultural survival during bondage and into an era of partial freedom. At the same time, he covers the ongoing tug-of-war between themes of "respectability" versus practices derived from an African heritage; the adoption of Christianity by the majority; and the critique of the adoption of the "white man's religion" from the eighteenth century to the present. The book also covers internal cultural, gendered, and class divisions in churches that attracted congregants of widely disparate educational levels, incomes, and worship styles. Through the Storm, Through the Night provides a lively overview of the history of African American religion, beginning with the birth of African Christianity amidst the Transatlantic slave trade, and tracing the story through its growth in America. Paul Harvey successfully uses the history of African American religion to portray the complexity and humanity of the African American experience.

Storm over South Africa follows the lives and tribulations of a diverse group of characters through the Second Anglo-Boer War from 1899 to 1902 in South Africa. They belonged to different levels of the opposing societies, and the story follows their actual life-and-death experiences in this conflict. The characters include the seventeen-year-old son of a Boer president, a young shipbuilding dock worker and his military nurse girlfriend from the industrial northeast of England, and a young Canadian soldier who volunteered for Canadas first campaign outside its borders. Involved too are such illustrious British participants as Winston Churchill, Field Marshal Frederick Roberts, and the generals Kitchener, Ian Hamilton, and Robert Baden-Powell, among others. Boer leaders involved include the generals Christiaan de Wet, Louis Botha, Koos de la Rey, and Jan Smuts. The reader is guided through the various twists and turns of the first major British conflict of the twentieth century from its beginning through to its end. The naivety and excitement of combatants in the lead-up to and beginning of the Second Anglo-Boer War was contagious. It pulled many naive young men into the maelstrom of combat. The failures, frustrations, disappointments, disillusionments, and suffering soon emerged. It is a tale of imperial arrogance, determination, stubbornness, innocence, love, and loss experienced in a rugged and alluring land far from the heart of the British Empire.

Storm in the night. Thunder like mountains blowing up. Lightning licking the navy-blue sky. Rain streaming down the windows, babbling in the downspouts. And Grandfather? . . . And Thomas? . . . And Ringo, the cat? They were in the dark. Too early to go to bed, and with only flashes of lightning to see by, Thomas and his grandfather happily find themselves re-discovering the half-forgotten scents and sounds of their world, and having a wonderful time learning important, new things about each other in a spirited conversation sparked by darkness. Mary Stolz and Pat Cummings have each brought their unique talents to this lyrical tale about a magical, stormy night and a special relationship.

An incisive account of the Persian Gulf War, Storm Over Iraq shows how the success of Operation Desert Storm was the product of two decades of profound changes in the American approach to defense, military doctrine, and combat operations. The first detailed analysis of why the Gulf War could be fought the way it was, the book examines the planning and preparation for war. Richard P. Hallion argues that the ascendancy of precision air power in warfare—which fulfilled the promise that air power had held for more than seventy-five years—reflects the revolutionary adaptation of a war strategy that targets things rather than people, allowing one to control an opposing nation without destroying it.
