This book highlights the application of Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) for high-resolution surface analysis and characterization of materials. While providing a brief overview of the principles of SIMS, it also provides examples of how dual-beam ToF-SIMS is used to investigate a range of materials systems and properties. Over the years, SIMS instrumentation has dramatically changed since the earliest secondary ion mass spectrometers were first developed. Instruments were once dedicated to either the depth profiling of materials using high-ion-beam currents to analyse near surface to bulk regions of materials (dynamic SIMS), or time-of-flight instruments that produced complex mass spectra of the very outer-most surface of samples, using very low-beam currents (static SIMS). Now, with the development of dual-beam instruments these two very distinct fields now overlap.

NanoScience in Biomedicine provides up-to-date information in the frontier fields of nano biomedicine focusing on basic concepts and recent developments in many topical areas including particular nanomaterials synthesis, field emission of carbon nanotubes, flexible dye-sensitized nano-porous films, magnetic nanofluids, and intrinsically electroconducting nanoparticles. Novel methods of synthesizing nanoscale biomaterials and their applications in biomedicine are also included such as nano-sized materials for drug delivery, bioactive molecules for regenerative medicine, nanoscale mechanisms for assembly of biomaterials, and nanostructured materials constructed from polypeptides. This book is organized in three parts: Part I introduces most recent developments in all aspects of design, synthesis, properties, and applications of nanoscale biomaterials. Part II focuses on novel nanotechnologies in biomedicine. Part III includes some of the new developments of nanomaterials’ synthesis and recent studies on nanostructure-properties relationships. The book comprehensively addresses the most critical issues in a tutorial manner so that technical non-specialists and students in both biomedical sciences and engineering will be able to benefit. All chapters are contributed by internationally recognized scholars. Dr. Donglu Shi is a professor at the Chemical and Materials Engineering Department, University of Cincinnati, USA.

Proteins, Cells and Materials contains a collection of articles, which constitute together the complete Festschrift in honor of the 65th birthday of Dr. John L. Brash. For the first time these articles - published previously in several special issues of the Journal of Biomaterials Science Polymer Edition - have been compiled into one comprehensive volume.Over the past 40 years John Brash, a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Biomaterials Science Polymer Edition, has distinguished himself in the field of biomaterials. Much of his efforts have focused on detailed studies of blood–surface interactions, particularly those of plasma proteins. His multi-faceted approach recognises the importance of hemodynamics, transport and surface phenomena in the gross effects that result from blood–surface contact. In this book articles on the most recent development in these areas are collected and will thus provide a wealth of information of current research to specialists in the above-mentioned fields.

This book opens with a description of fundamental aspects of protein adsorption to surfaces, a phenomenon that plays a key role in biotechnological applications, especially at solid-liquid interfaces. Presented here are methods for studying adsorption kinetics and conformational changes such as optical waveguide lightmode spectroscopy (OWLS). Also described are sensitive bench techniques for measuring the orientation and structure of proteins at solid-liquid interfaces, including total internal reflection ellipsometry (TIRE), dual polarisation interferometry (DPI) and time of flight - secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF–SIMS). A model study of fibronectin at polymer surfaces is included, as are studies using microporous membranes and textiles with immobilized enzymes for large-scale applications. Biocompatibility, anti-fouling properties and surface modification to modulate the adsorption and activity of biomolecules are among the other topics addressed in this invaluable book.
