Excerpt from book: Thursday, 17th January, 1889. ANNUAL GENEEAL MEETING. SAMUEL KEEPER, President, in the Chair. MORNING SESSION. The notice convening the meeting having been read, it was moved by Mr. H. F. Perlcy, seconded by Mr. E. Foray th and resolved, That Messrs. A. Brittain, G. A. Mountain and F. Chadwickbe requested to act as scrutineers for the election of the President, Vice- Presidents, Treasurer, Librarian, Secretary, and other Members of Council for the year 1889. It was moved by Mr. W. J. Sproule, seconded by Prof. McLeod, That the scrutineers be instructed to make a return of all the names receiving votes, together with the number of votes cast in each case, and that such return be published in the minutes of the annual meeting. It was moved in amendment by Mr. P. A. Peterson, seconded by Mr. H. A. F. MacLeod, That the returns shew only the names of the officers elected. The amendment, on being put to the meeting, was carried. It was moved by Mr. St. G. Boswell, seconded by Mr. G. H. Garden and resolved, That Messrs. W. McL. Walbauk, T. W. Lesage and P. L. Naismith be requested to act as scrutineers of the ballot for the proposed Amendments to the By-Laws. The minutes of the last annual meeting having been read, it was moved by Mr. W. J. Sproule, seconded by Prof. McLeod, That the minutes be amended in accordance with the resolution requiring the scrutineers to make a return of all the names receiving votes, together with the number of votes cast in each case. It was moved in amendment by Mr. J. Kennedy, seconded by Mr. H. Wallis, That the minutes as read be adopted. The amendment was carried. Excerpt from Transactions of the Canadian Society of Civil Engineers, Vol. 2: Part 1; January to June, 1888 The Board was empowered to charge annual fees for membership - to divide Engineering into branches, and to grant a diploma entitling candidates to practice in those branches only upon which they had gone up for examination. Also to classify Engineers into grades A, B, C; D. An A1 man, who could take the whole twenty-eight engineer ing subjects described in the Index, was to rank as Chief Engineer. B was to pass in more than one branch to be Chief Engineer only in the branches for which he had passed and been commissioned. C was a one branch man, and his diploma made him a simple Engineer in that Only. D held a second class diploma and was ranked as Assistant Engineer. Excerpt from Transactions of the Canadian Society of Civil Engineers, 1906, Vol. 20 In writing papers, or discussions on papers, the use of the first person should be avoided. They should be legibly written on foolscap paper, on one side only, with a margin on the left side. Illustrations, when necessary, should be drawn on the dull side of tracing linen to as small a scale as is consistent with distinct ness. They should not be more than ten inches in height and in no case should any one figure exceed this height. Black ink only should be used, and all lines, lettering, etc must be clear and dis tinct. When necessary to illustrate a paper for reading, diagrams must be furnished. These must be bold. Distinct and clearly visible in detail for a distance of thirty feet. Papers which have been read before other Societies, or have been published, cannot be read at meetings of this Society. All communications must be forwarded to the Secretary of the Society from whom any further information may be obtained.
