Transforming Theological Knowledge

A number of outstanding public intellectuals such as Jonathan Jansen, Crain Soudien and Lis Lange have been invited to present papers to clarify the conceptual challenge and what this might entail for theology. Well-known theologians such as Conrad Wethmar, Allan Boesak and Martin Prozesky reflect on the nature of theology and religion at universities amidst social exigencies. Two international theologians – Harold Attridge from the prestigious Yale Divinity School and Bram van de Beek from the Free University of Amsterdam – share their experiences of institutions that exemplify excellence and ecumenical openness.

For several decades concern has been expressed about the need for greater integration and contextual significance in the curricular design of theological education. In addition there has been a growing awareness of the role theological schools should play in strengthening the missional vision and practice of local churches. Since 2008 the Arab Baptist Theological Seminary in Lebanon has been engaged in an ongoing experiment in the design and implementation of an integrated and contextually driven curriculum. Drawing on lessons learned from this experience, and from the wider discourse currently taking place in higher education, Transforming Theological Education provides theoretical foundations and practical principles for purposeful curriculum design, as well as tools for integrated and contextually significant learning in the classroom.

The essays which make up this volume arise out of the author's ongoing engagement with the tension between Christian theology and the general frame of thought that has dominated European culture for several hundred years. The early Christian Church set about not only to communicate the Gospel to the Greco-Roman world but also to transform the prevailing mode of thought and culture so that the Gospel could take deep root and develop within it. Therefore, in every age, says Thomas F. Torrance, "the Christian faith must be brought to bear transformingly upon the whole frame of human culture, science, and philosophy."

Transforming Service is a seminal book developed by student services professionals in theological education. This edited volume is new and innovative in that it puts the student services professional and their work with divinity students center-stage. God clearly intends that lives of Christians and the life of the church should differ from those of the unredeemed.
