This book presents historical perspectives, current political issues, and definition of terms in regard to stuttering, characteristics of the development of stuttering, as well as an overall description of new methods of treatment. It is coauthored by a leading expert in the field and a person who stutters. The stated purpose of this book is to provide information about newer assessment and therapy techniques that have not been widely disseminated. These include combining fluency-enhancing and stuttering modification techniques, the use of Gestalt experiential therapy and principles of 12-step recovery programs, as well as recommendations for treatment of preschool and school-aged children who are beginning to stutter. The authors state that this book is written for speech-language pathologists, for individuals who stutter, and for parents of children who stutter. The first author is well qualified with over 30 years of experience in the field of fluency disorders. The style is straightforward and easy to read. Unique features include a list of self-help organizations that are resources for the person who stutters, the American-Speech-Language-Hearing Association Guidelines for Practice in Stuttering Treatment, and a story for group-telling for preschool children at risk for stuttering. This book is a helpful addition to the library of experienced clinicians who want to incorporate recent approaches into fluency treatment, as well as for more junior clinicians who want to learn about a broad array of therapy techniques. The inclusion of basic definitions and fundamental information about stuttering make it a usable resource for the lay person.

This highly readable, clinically oriented book combines theory and therapy and examines all facets of stuttering, from possible etiologies through assessment to treatment. While considerable uncertainty still exists regarding the precise cause(s) of stuttering, Conture provides the reader with an even-handed coverage of fundamental knowledge, methodology, and procedures for effectively dealing with stuttering in children, teenagers, and adults. The book goes beyond a "how to" manual. Rather, Conture's clinical handbook provides both students and clinicians a source for principle-based procedures and strategies for the management of stuttering. Focusing on people who stutter as people first and people who stutter second, the material covers assessment and management of stuttering within the realities of everyday living, concomitant speech and language problems and clinical practice. For those in the fields of communication science and disorders and speech pathology.

In recent years, most disagreement about stuttering therapy has boiled down to a preference for one of two major approaches. Some clinicians have preferred to help stutterers learn not to avoid stuttering, but to approach it and to learn to stutter in simpler and easier ways; this approach is known as stuttering modification therapy. Proponents of the fluency shaping therapy, on the other hand, teach stutterers to speak in a fluent pattern that can be gradually shaped to normal sounding speech in all situations. This book illustrates how it is both possible and desirable to integrate and coordinate these two therapeutic approaches while still retaining the advantages of both. The five chapters address: (1) comparison of stuttering modification and fluency shaping therapies; (2) preliminary comments on diagnostic and treatment procedures; (3) the high school and adult stutterer; (4) the elementary school child who stutters; and (5) the preschool child who stutters.
