Daniel Cottone had a magnificent and tumultuous year in 1969. There was the contentious, ongoing struggle for civil rights for minorities erupting across America and the continuation of an excruciating, unpopular war in Vietnam. The forces obstructing the civil rights effort and supporting the devastating conflict were stubbornly steadfast. Cottone looks back at the eras events, as well as the painful memories of his first lovea love that he lostin this epic novel. Amid that backdrop is the pressure of the military draft, the Woodstock music festival, and the narrators increasing doubt about the war and American values. His experiences mirror the road that many of his peers traveled, but inexplicably, by the end of 1969, that intangible something that defined the era had already begun to fade. The title of the book contains and embodies the word Tripping. With respect to the story, it has three primary definitions: tripping as in traveling; tripping as in searching and stumbling; and, finally, tripping as in tripping (on drugs). Join Cottone as he travels across America in search of new places and new peoplebecoming an active participant of history in Tripping Across 1969.

Take a trip down the rabbit hole without ever leaving the comfort of your living room... This is a novel in which history meets science fiction and psychedelics meet spirituality through a seamless blend of fact and fantasy. 1969: A Brief and Beautiful Trip Back is one girl's account of her fantastic and unique experience of the hippie counterculture and how it changed her and those around her for the rest of their lives. From a run-of-the-mill existence in the ultra-conservative town of Fresno, California, formerly naïve teenager and rock devotee Rhiannon Karlson takes the trip of a lifetime after a drug dealer sells her a particularly potent and mysterious substance, sparking her unparalleled journey of soul-searching, consciousness-expansion, and unyielding search for the Truth. The rest, you may say, is history.

This dual biography highlights the human dimensions of the Upper Missouri fur trade. Focusing on two major figures, Alexander Culbertson (1809-1879), trader with the American Fur Company, founder of Fort Benton, and the first white American to live among the Blackfeet Indians, and his wife, Natoyist-Siksina’ (“Holy Snake”) (1825-1893), daughter of Two Suns, the chief of the Blood (Kainah) tribe, Lesley Wischmann shows the great influence this couple had on the region. Culbertson and Natoyist-Siksina’ worked together for thirty years to promote cooperative relations between Native inhabitants and newly arrived white adventurers and played key roles in the Fort Laramie Treaty Conference of 1851 and treaty negotiations with the Blackfeet tribes in 1855. As she tells the story of these “frontier diplomats,” Wischmann also challenges conventional wisdom about the character of fur traders, the nature of the Blackfeet, and the role of Indian women.

Drawing from his teenage years, Todd Strasser’s novel revisits a tumultuous era and takes readers on a psychedelically tinged trip of a lifetime. With his girlfriend, Robin, away in Canada, eighteen-year-old Lucas Baker’s only plans for the summer are to mellow out with his friends, smoke weed, drop a tab or two, and head out in his microbus for a three-day happening called the Woodstock Music and Art Fair. But life veers dramatically off track when he suddenly finds himself in danger of being drafted and sent to fight in Vietnam. If that isn’t heavy enough, there’s also the free-loving (and undeniably alluring) Tinsley, who seems determined to test Lucas’s resolve to stay faithful to Robin; a frighteningly bad trip at a Led Zeppelin concert; a run-in with an angry motorcycle gang; parents who appear headed for a divorce; and a friend on the front lines in ’Nam who’s in mortal danger of not making it back. As the pressures grow, it’s not long before Lucas finds himself knocked so far down, it’s starting to look like up to him. When tuning in, turning on, and dropping out is no longer enough, what else is there?
